JACK NICHOLSON – FIVE EASY
PIECES – 1970
It’s a simple situation that so many people know. It was
tragic in 1970. It is pathetic in 2023.
A boy is born into a family of musicians. He is more or
less forced to take the same road and enter a musical
career. The Piano will be his instrument. But it never was
his choice and if you can learn how to play an instrument
properly, even if you do not like it, sooner or later you get
bored, if not something worse.
He runs away from his family and gets odd jobs to
survive. He gets a girlfriend because it is what you have to
do. He lives, even on his escape, a life that is dictated by
rules coming from “society as a whole.” In 1970 that was the
norm and that led so many young people to drastic choices
that often went along prostitution, crime, drugs, various
diseases, and AIDS was not yet there but soon it will lead to
a real carnage.
He is trapped by his family to come back because the
father has had a stroke and is very bad: he cannot speak at
all anymore. They live on an island. He leaves his girlfriend
who has come along on the mainland and he takes the
ferry. Soon She will cross and she will find the family very
attractive. But the young man is bored to death and has no future with these musicians, even if they are his
family. He escapes again, with his girlfriend following. That’s what love is, I guess.
But at the first gas station on the mainland, he will drop it all, car and girlfriend and he will thumb a lift
from a truck driver going anywhere provided it is not here, there, or even over there where he would be
trapped by brothers, sisters, fathers, mothers, and who knows what other parents or relatives.
Jack Nicholson is quite good in the part but the film means nothing really since we do not see what
this man can do on his own, cut off from his family dependence. It has no future because he has no future
except living along with what comes to him or what he comes across without any planning or perspective.
I do prefer two films from the same period and the same ideology. Fritz the Cat of course, and
Zabriskie Point. The music part is very standard and even banal: not one piece that is off the main double
solid line of the main road of average social taste in classical music. Just for fun here they are, the five
pieces:
Frédéric Chopin, Fantasy in F minor, Op. 49,
Johann Sebastian Bach, Chromatic Fantasia and Fugue, BWV 903,
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Piano Concerto No. 9 in E-flat major, K. 271,
Chopin, Prelude in E minor, Op. 28, No. 4,
Mozart, Fantasy in D minor, K. 397.
Listen to them all, one after the other. They are the perfect pentacle of the most demoniacal devil that
holds you prisoner in chains and manacles of all sorts. You are a ghost in chains and absolutely naked and
defenseless under the sheet of your ghost-dom. We sure would prefer some Danse Macabre or some
Carnival of Animals or some other pieces that really disband morality and ethics and let their audience
dream not an escape but a full descent into the marvelous inner world of their imagination. Imagine
Debussy’s Arabesques. They would be freedom on a keyboard.
But I still do not understand why Silvia Ferrara quotes this film as a model for the decipherer of an
unknown script of an unknown language, especially since after listing the five easy tasks of the decipherer
she adds a sixth one.

C’est une situation simple que tant de gens
connaissent. C’était tragique en 1970. C’est pathétique en
2023.
Un garçon naît dans une famille de musiciens. Il est
plus ou moins obligé de suivre le même chemin et de se
lancer dans une carrière musicale. Le piano sera son
instrument. Mais cela n’a jamais été son choix et si vous
pouvez apprendre à jouer correctement d’un instrument,
même si vous ne l’aimez pas, tôt ou tard vous vous
ennuyerez, voire pire.
Il fuit sa famille et trouve des petits boulots pour
survivre. Il a une petite amie parce que c'est ce que vous
devez faire. Il mène, même dans sa fuite, une vie dictée par
des règles émanant de « la société dans son ensemble ».
En 1970, c'était la norme et cela a conduit tant de jeunes à
des choix drastiques qui allaient souvent de pair avec la
prostitution, au moins la promiscuité, la criminalité, la
drogue, diverses maladies et le SIDA n'était pas encore là
mais cela mènera bientôt à un véritable carnage.
Il est piégé par sa famille pour revenir parce que son
père a eu un accident vasculaire cérébral et se porte très
mal : il ne peut plus parler du tout. Ils vivent sur une île. Il laisse sa copine venue avec lui sur le continent et
prend le ferry. Bientôt, elle traversera et elle trouvera la famille très attirante. Mais le jeune homme s'ennuie
à mourir et n'a aucun avenir avec ces musiciens, même s'ils sont sa famille. Il s'échappe à nouveau, suivi
de sa petite amie. C'est ça l'amour, je suppose.
Mais à la première station-service du continent, il lâchera tout, voiture et petite amie et il se fera
prendre en stop par un chauffeur de camion qui va n'importe où pourvu que ce ne soit pas ici, là, ni même
là-bas où il serait coincé par des frères, sœurs, pères, mères, et qui sait quels autres parents ou proches.
Jack Nicholson est plutôt bon dans le rôle mais le film ne veut vraiment rien dire puisqu'on ne voit pas
ce que cet homme peut faire seul, coupé de sa dépendance familiale. Il n'a pas d'avenir parce qu'il n'a
d'autre choix que de vivre avec ce qui lui arrive ou ce qu'il rencontre sans aucune planification ni
perspective.
Je préfère deux films de la même époque et de la même idéologie. Fritz le chat bien sûr, et Zabriskie
Point. La partie musicale est très standard et même banale : pas un seul morceau qui s'écarte de la bande
blanche continue de la grand route, l’autoroute du goût social moyen en musique classique. Juste pour
m'amuser les voici, les cinq pièces :

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Concerto pour piano n° 9 en mi bémol majeur, K. 271,

Écoutez-les toutes, les unes après les autres. Elles sont le pentacle parfait du diable le plus
démoniaque qui vous tient prisonnier dans des chaînes et des menottes de toutes sortes. Vous êtes un
fantôme enchaîné et absolument nu et sans défense sous le drap de votre fantôme-rie. Nous préférerions
certainement une Danse Macabre ou un Carnaval des Animaux ou d'autres pièces qui brisent réellement la
moralité et l'éthique et laissent leur public rêver non pas à une évasion mais à une descente intégrale dans
le monde intérieur merveilleux de leur imagination. Imaginez les Arabesques de Debussy. Ce serait la
liberté sur un clavier.
Mais je ne comprends toujours pas pourquoi Silvia Ferrara cite ce film comme modèle pour le
déchiffreur d'une écriture inconnue d'une langue inconnue, d'autant plus qu'après avoir énuméré les cinq
tâches faciles du déchiffreur elle en ajoute une sixième.

1970, The Beginning of the End

  • 2. JACK NICHOLSON – FIVE EASY PIECES – 1970 It’s a simple situation that so many people know. It was tragic in 1970. It is pathetic in 2023. A boy is born into a family of musicians. He is more or less forced to take the same road and enter a musical career. The Piano will be his instrument. But it never was his choice and if you can learn how to play an instrument properly, even if you do not like it, sooner or later you get bored, if not something worse. He runs away from his family and gets odd jobs to survive. He gets a girlfriend because it is what you have to do. He lives, even on his escape, a life that is dictated by rules coming from “society as a whole.” In 1970 that was the norm and that led so many young people to drastic choices that often went along prostitution, crime, drugs, various diseases, and AIDS was not yet there but soon it will lead to a real carnage. He is trapped by his family to come back because the father has had a stroke and is very bad: he cannot speak at all anymore. They live on an island. He leaves his girlfriend who has come along on the mainland and he takes the ferry. Soon She will cross and she will find the family very attractive. But the young man is bored to death and has no future with these musicians, even if they are his family. He escapes again, with his girlfriend following. That’s what love is, I guess. But at the first gas station on the mainland, he will drop it all, car and girlfriend and he will thumb a lift from a truck driver going anywhere provided it is not here, there, or even over there where he would be trapped by brothers, sisters, fathers, mothers, and who knows what other parents or relatives. Jack Nicholson is quite good in the part but the film means nothing really since we do not see what this man can do on his own, cut off from his family dependence. It has no future because he has no future except living along with what comes to him or what he comes across without any planning or perspective. I do prefer two films from the same period and the same ideology. Fritz the Cat of course, and Zabriskie Point. The music part is very standard and even banal: not one piece that is off the main double solid line of the main road of average social taste in classical music. Just for fun here they are, the five pieces: Frédéric Chopin, Fantasy in F minor, Op. 49, Johann Sebastian Bach, Chromatic Fantasia and Fugue, BWV 903, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Piano Concerto No. 9 in E-flat major, K. 271, Chopin, Prelude in E minor, Op. 28, No. 4, Mozart, Fantasy in D minor, K. 397. Listen to them all, one after the other. They are the perfect pentacle of the most demoniacal devil that holds you prisoner in chains and manacles of all sorts. You are a ghost in chains and absolutely naked and defenseless under the sheet of your ghost-dom. We sure would prefer some Danse Macabre or some Carnival of Animals or some other pieces that really disband morality and ethics and let their audience dream not an escape but a full descent into the marvelous inner world of their imagination. Imagine Debussy’s Arabesques. They would be freedom on a keyboard.

But I still do not understand why Silvia Ferrara quotes this film as a model for the decipherer of an unknown script of an unknown language, especially since after listing the five easy tasks of the decipherer she adds a sixth one. Dr. Jacques COULARDEAU VERSION FRANÇAISE C’est une situation simple que tant de gens connaissent. C’était tragique en 1970. C’est pathétique en 2023. Un garçon naît dans une famille de musiciens. Il est plus ou moins obligé de suivre le même chemin et de se lancer dans une carrière musicale. Le piano sera son instrument. Mais cela n’a jamais été son choix et si vous pouvez apprendre à jouer correctement d’un instrument, même si vous ne l’aimez pas, tôt ou tard vous vous ennuyerez, voire pire. Il fuit sa famille et trouve des petits boulots pour survivre. Il a une petite amie parce que c'est ce que vous devez faire. Il mène, même dans sa fuite, une vie dictée par des règles émanant de « la société dans son ensemble ». En 1970, c'était la norme et cela a conduit tant de jeunes à des choix drastiques qui allaient souvent de pair avec la prostitution, au moins la promiscuité, la criminalité, la drogue, diverses maladies et le SIDA n'était pas encore là mais cela mènera bientôt à un véritable carnage. Il est piégé par sa famille pour revenir parce que son père a eu un accident vasculaire cérébral et se porte très mal : il ne peut plus parler du tout. Ils vivent sur une île. Il laisse sa copine venue avec lui sur le continent et prend le ferry. Bientôt, elle traversera et elle trouvera la famille très attirante. Mais le jeune homme s'ennuie à mourir et n'a aucun avenir avec ces musiciens, même s'ils sont sa famille. Il s'échappe à nouveau, suivi de sa petite amie. C'est ça l'amour, je suppose. Mais à la première station-service du continent, il lâchera tout, voiture et petite amie et il se fera prendre en stop par un chauffeur de camion qui va n'importe où pourvu que ce ne soit pas ici, là, ni même là-bas où il serait coincé par des frères, sœurs, pères, mères, et qui sait quels autres parents ou proches. Jack Nicholson est plutôt bon dans le rôle mais le film ne veut vraiment rien dire puisqu'on ne voit pas ce que cet homme peut faire seul, coupé de sa dépendance familiale. Il n'a pas d'avenir parce qu'il n'a d'autre choix que de vivre avec ce qui lui arrive ou ce qu'il rencontre sans aucune planification ni perspective. Je préfère deux films de la même époque et de la même idéologie. Fritz le chat bien sûr, et Zabriskie Point. La partie musicale est très standard et même banale : pas un seul morceau qui s'écarte de la bande blanche continue de la grand route, l’autoroute du goût social moyen en musique classique. Juste pour m'amuser les voici, les cinq pièces : Frédéric Chopin, Fantaisie en fa mineur, op. 49, Johann Sebastian Bach, Fantaisie chromatique et fugue, BWV 903, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Concerto pour piano n° 9 en mi bémol majeur, K. 271, Chopin, Prélude en mi mineur, op. 28, n° 4, Mozart, Fantaisie en ré mineur, K. 397. Écoutez-les toutes, les unes après les autres. Elles sont le pentacle parfait du diable le plus démoniaque qui vous tient prisonnier dans des chaînes et des menottes de toutes sortes. Vous êtes un fantôme enchaîné et absolument nu et sans défense sous le drap de votre fantôme-rie. Nous préférerions certainement une Danse Macabre ou un Carnaval des Animaux ou d'autres pièces qui brisent réellement la
  • 4. moralité et l'éthique et laissent leur public rêver non pas à une évasion mais à une descente intégrale dans le monde intérieur merveilleux de leur imagination. Imaginez les Arabesques de Debussy. Ce serait la liberté sur un clavier. Mais je ne comprends toujours pas pourquoi Silvia Ferrara cite ce film comme modèle pour le déchiffreur d'une écriture inconnue d'une langue inconnue, d'autant plus qu'après avoir énuméré les cinq tâches faciles du déchiffreur elle en ajoute une sixième.
