Duration is all that plants and animals experience. They last as long as either possible or necessary. When the phylogenic target of bringing in the next generation of life is fulfilled, the plant or the animal can die or wither away. Homo Sapiens, and probably most Hominins developed from experience the need to measure this duration, at first in days and nights, and then in clusters of days and nights. Then they can coordinate their observations and notice some cosmic items go through regular existential cycles, first of all, the sun rising or lowering in the sky with shortening or lengthening days and nights. Second, the moon and its phases are numbered as two, four, or three, but systematically waxing and waning. You can easily measure all that in solar days and that is the beginning of time: a human invention quantifying the duration of anything in observable regular elements.
From what we know the Mayas were among the most advanced people for such time-quantification and they developed all sorts of calendars to do this. But they were neither the first one nor the last one. They were not the best either, though they were very good. I will even say that all the lines of dots or check marks or squares or other geometric forms we can find in all the caves in the world in which Hominins and Homo Sapiens lived and that they decorated in many ways are the quantification of various phenomena, though we don’t always know which ones.
This book by Hunbatz Men concentrates on Mayan calendars but in modern language and modern terms, not necessarily in the real Mayan terms at the time, up to 3,000 years ago. It assumes the Mayas were aware of the leap years, though we do not seem to have any real reason to believe so. The author does not work on any serious lunar hypothesis, maybe a calendar. It vaguely mentions but does not explore the Venus cycles as Morning Star and as Evening Star. To work on the Pleiades, why not, yet one question does not concern such a long cycle but the simple working of the ritualistic 260-day Tzolk’in Calendar that is out of sync with the solar calendar, the 365-day Haab Calendar, and even more so if we consider the 360-day Haab Calendar, and how the ritual activities dictated by the Tzolk’in Calendar can be prescribed and predicted and performed when their Tzolk’in dates can fall at any time, in any season in the Haab Calendar. It is hard enough to coordinate the 12-and-a-half moon cycles over a solar calendar, but many civilizations are dealing with it and managing it with cyclical corrections.
That’s why it would have been good to give us some elements on this very same problem with the Tzolk’in calendar when we can compare with the difficult adaptation of the Muslim Lunar ritualistic calendar to the Gregorian calendar. The floating Ramadan is the result of this necessary adaptation. In other words, the present book is slightly short.

EXISTENTIAL DURATION MEASURED BY MAYAN TIME

2. HUNBATZ MEN – THE 8 CALENDARS OF
THE MAYA, THE PLEIADIAN CYCLE, AND
THE KEY TO DESTINY – 1983 IN MAYA,
2010 IN ENGLISH
The book on the supposed eight calendars of the Maya is coming out of the past and has not
at all integrated new elements available, even before 2010, so it appears as a well-built puzzle
book that seems to prove the conclusion is correct because all the calculations lead to the same
result: multiples of 13, multiples of 20, eventually multiples of 7. But let me quickly reveal some of
the ideological ideas put down on the table from the very start without any kind of proof or simple
indications there could be some serious and hard evidence.
1- The lost continents of Lemuria (Mu) in the Pacific and Atlantis in the Atlantic are nothing but
myths with no proof. The two enormous continents in the middle of the two oceans would have
necessarily left a lot of evidence if they had collapsed so suddenly: no erosion, just plain collapse.
Satellites today have better eyes than us, but they don’t seem to be able to see anything.
2- The idea that the population on these two continents was culturally, scientifically, and
linguistically advanced with a rather less developed human population on all the other continents,
those that have survived this big catastrophe, all the continents we know today. But where did
these special advanced “human(or humanoid?)” beings come from and when they had finished
their “mission” to educate the simple humans on all the other continents, where did they go with
their two continents disappearing in the two concerned oceans without any trace left behind?
Where did the simple un-advanced human people on the surviving continents come from, and how
did they evolve and improve? Simple, Dr. Watson, by copying and plagiarizing the disappeared
extra-something-somewhere-maybe-terrestrials. And all that happened when Homo Sapiens had
reached all continents, so around 15,000 BCE, not before. That is in a way ludicrous.
3- The author pretends Maya was the original language of these Mu and Atlantis extra-real
beings, and thus Maya was the original language of the Homo Sapiens species. Then the author
makes everything jump around, from Yucatan to Egypt, to Asia, to anywhere you want, and for the
author, the presence of pyramids practically everywhere in the world does mean all these pyramids
are all connected genetically, meaning one is the model and the others, all the others, are copies.
This is plainly unscientific. Two things might look alike, but it does not prove they are genetically
3. connected, even by an extra-something-somewhere-maybe-terrestrial thinktank with no genetic
emergence provided: we are soaking in the immaculate conception of ideas, principles, concepts,
and even the people who carry them all.
You should rather explore the hypothesis of entoptics: some basic geometric forms are simply
contained in the architecture of the human nervous system and that explains that the human brain
that discriminates forms in what it sensually receives from the senses will naturally discriminate
some forms thus contained in the architecture of the nervous system. These shapes will naturally
appear in dreams, in the visual consciousness of what people see, and discriminate in the outside
environment, hence in their drawing productions. Such elements (entoptics and recognition of
forms) are used in some educational games for very young children with blocks of special shapes,
and a board with openings corresponding to these shapes. The game is to put the blocks through
the holes that fit, a case of guided recognition and developmental emphasis (the process of
success and failure: only the proper form will go through the proper hole).
The question then is not where they come from, these shapes, square, triangle, circle, and a
few more, and pyramids in 3D vision. The question is why do we all humans recognize them? How
can our senses and our brain recognize them, produce them, and discriminate them in the
sensuous continuity of the environment? Entoptics are perfectly and scientifically legitimate in our
culture and experience. Why do spiderwebs always look the same? Instinct is a tentative answer,
but entoptics is a better answer: it is embedded in the architecture of the central nervous system of
the spiders, including the geometric forms they use. Same thing for wild or domestic bees when
they build their honeycombs. The shapes will be very regular because it is embedded in the
architecture of their central nervous system, no matter how small it may be if compared to that of
the human species. Experiments have been made with psychedelic drugs and then the spiderwebs
are no longer that regular.
4- The author speaks of Maya as the original language of the whole world, but he never gives
the original glyphs of the original writing. He works on what he considers the real “abstract
conceptual god” that keeps the balance between 13 and 20, respectively the square and the circle,
between movement, energy, and soul on one side, and measure, form, and spirit on the other
hand, but he does not analyze the Maya name of this abstract God: Hunab K’u. He does not give
the composite glyph of this name so that he does not have to analyze it. But let me do it. In fact, he
4. should have started with his own name: Hun ONE – batz MONKEY – Men FIFTEENTH DAY OF
THE MAYA TZOLK’IN CALENDAR identified as an EAGLE. Monkeys are often identified as scribes
and even artists, and they climb in trees and relay their ascent to the eagle who can fly into the sky,
and this ascending being is number one in his field.
Back to Hunab K’u. “Hun” or “Jun” is the cardinal number ONE. At the beginning of a name, it
is common. “Jun Nal Ye” (ONE-MAIZE-REVEALED) is the name of the Maize God. And there we
have a lot to say about the Hero Twins.
Their father is Hun Hunahpu, and their uncle is Wuk Hunahpu. Hunahpu is HUN-ahpu (or
HUN-ajpu) ONE-lord. The father is ONE-ONE-lord, and the uncle is SEVEN-ONE-lord. The twins
are Hunahpu (ONE-lord) and Xbalanque (x-b’alam-k’in, x-jaguar-sun, or x-b’alam-chij, x-jaguar-
deer). Those Hero Twins will have to commit suicide, get cremated, and then get resuscitated from
their ashes thrown into the river and then they will defeat the main two Death Lords of Xibalba,
Hun-Came, ONE-death, and Wuk-Came, SEVEN-death. The initial “X-“ of Xbalanque can be
understood as “xa” meaning “already in the process of acting,” or as “xi” (like in Xibalba, the
underworld) meaning “death, or targeting death.” This brings “SEVEN” as a number that has a
symbolic value, second to ONE, and the present author’s connection with the seven planets of the
Pleiades does not explain more than the absence of explanation provided by Coe and others. At
least Men’s connection is in a way natural for the Mayas who observed the sky all the time. But
how could they know or calculate the cycle of this constellation, the Pleiades: It takes 26,000 years
for the sun to make a complete revolution around Alcyone, the center of the Pleiades constellation
around which our own star system revolves, according to what Hunbatz Men says.
5- I will not enter the long discussion of a square embedded in a circle, the square having a
horizontal diagonal cutting it into two triangles, the top one being a pyramid, with what’s more
another circle embedded on this diagonal with the upper triangle of the embedded square in it
turned into another pyramid. That’s amazing how the author embeds triangles, squares, and circles
into one another and yet he does not see this as fundamentally entoptic. Before giving any
meaning to the shapes, you have to explain how these shapes come into existence and, what’s
more, into mutually embedded existence. Now it is time to look at the basic calendars, Haab and
Tzolk’in with what Hunbatz Men does not call the Long Count though it is the same thing: counting
time and dates over long periods of time.
6- He confirms that for him the Haab, the solar calendar used for the Long Count only has 360
days and misses the five days of the Wayeb extra month and the one-fourth of a day of the leap
year extra day. When he jumps to very long periods, he corrects the calculations by adding the 5¼
days for each year. The Mayas were conscious of the five days since they had them added to the
standard Haab calendar as the Wayeb month. Were they conscious of the leap years (a concept
5. derived from Gregorian practices: were they conscious of the ¼ day missing every year? If they
were, that proves their advancement, and how did they correct it? If they were not that proves what
Men is doing is anachronic since he does it in their place, as if they did the same. But In other
approaches by other authors on the Long Count, it was never clear whether the Mayas used the
extended Haab calendar with 365 days or the standard Haab calendar with 360 days. Most of the
time, modern archaeologists are correcting them automatically, but it might not be what the Mayas
were doing. Since the Mayas reconstructed the past from the present there never was a problem in
the present, but if instead of retrospectively looking at the past, we look at time prospectively,
hence towards the future and watch time coming to us, and passing over us into the past, we
cannot evacuate the question if we want to remain in proper timing in the future, even the close
future. Over one single century, the leap years represent 25+1 days, and that is more than one full
month of the Haab calendar. Did the Maya correct this mistake?
7- I will not enter the discussion of the various arithmetic calculations of the author because
since he corrects all the results with the necessary corrections imposed by the modern vision of
our standard Gregorian calendar, I am not surprised that he will find 13 and 20 everywhere: they
come from the basic pattern of the Maya calendars, particularly the Tzolk’in calendar. And I must
say Hunbatz Men does not explore the main question of this particular ritualistic calendar: It has
260 days organized in 13 sequences of the 20 days of a standard month in Maya calendars. But
he does not consider the fact that one 260-Day Tzolk’in calendar will be followed by another 260-
Day Tzolk’in calendar. How does that fit with the Haab calendar, be it 360 days or 365 days? And
what about the ritualistic practices contained in this Tzolk’in calendar that does not cover the same
time procedure as the Haab calendar? How can a society live on two very different calendars, one
for the seasons, a solar calendar for agriculture, and the other totally unconnected and for ritualistic
use and practices? What’s more in this Tzolk’in calendar, Venus is essential, Morning and Evening
Star alike, and the Moon is central though this calendar is NOT lunar. These planets are just not
taken into account. The two calendars create what is known as a calendar round of 52 years, when
on the winter solstice the two calendars are back to the same simultaneous identification of the
date. The last time it happened and we shifted from one round to the next, was on December 21,
2012, when the date was on both Tzolkin and Haab, when the Calendar Round date was 4 Ajaw 3
K’ank’in. exactly the same as 52 years before, hence December 21, 1960.
8- So, this book does not solve many problems dealing with Maya Calendars, and at times
some remarks are not exactly correct. To speak of the menstrual cycle of women as being the
moon cycle of women, seems to be very tentative since despite what he says a moon cycle is not
28 days, but 29½ and the full length of a woman’s pregnancy lasts for about 280 days or 40 weeks.
With his reasoning a pregnancy is ten moon cycles, but it is wrong because ten moon cycles are
295 days, hence 15 days or two weeks too long. And pregnancy can vary tremendously in one way
or the other. It depends on a tremendous number of factors, some being psychosomatic, and some
purely psychological, or purely somatic.
6.
7. In conclusion, I will say it is good to read the pure interpretation of such facts from the purely
Maya point of view, but then it is biased since it tries to exclude any influence from outside and
other ideological frames of thinking. But it is always worth trying to get into it. But you need here to
have a good literacy of numbers and operational calculations, for the book, and you must
supplement the book with the Maya glyphs if you want to understand anything. The glyphs are the
key to the Maya culture and history, including the tremendous genocide and culturicide the Spanish
imposed on the Mayas after the European epidemics wiped out at least half the population.
Dr. Jacques COULARDEAU
Hun-Came, UN-mort, et Wuk-Came, SEPT-mort.
Tzolk'in.
