Amazon Prime Video and Blumhouse Productions love dysfunctioning mothers who, in the name of their love for their children, are ready to kill anyone only on their gut feelings that this anyone is guilty of who knows what apart from the devil. The film is tricky enough to lure and fool the audience, and the horror of the racist and dysfunctional situation can be believed till the end when the trick is revealed. Note this revelation implies that all daughters from divorced or motherless families are by definition, even by principle, liars. You might also find the father falling in an ice-cold river under a blizzard of some sort funny, and with his winter coat on, and then he goes on parading around outside, in the unheated car, and even in some kind of social situation without changing his freezing clothes. Like at the Oscars yesterday the costume design Oscar was delivered to a costume designer wearing no clothes at all, except a small cardboard sign where sexually necessary for the picture, meaning that costume designers are so badly treated and paid that they cannot even afford to buy underwear. A little bit more about the context, schools, religion, Islam and girls, divorced parents, single Muslim male parent, etc. would have maybe given some depth to the story and made it less artificial.

2. AMAZON PRIME VIDEO –
THE LIE – 2018
A strange and in many ways shocking film. The main teenage girl in this film is fifteen. She is the
daughter of divorced parents, and that division creates in her a case of divided allegiance, and this
makes her no longer sure of what is truth and what is lying. Her teenage girlfriend is the same age or
so. She is the daughter of a live-alone Pakistani hence Muslim – we assume – father. The Pakistani girl
decides to organize with her American girlfriend a bizarre scenario in which the Pakistani girl
disappears for a couple of days so that she can go see her boyfriend and actually do a little bit more
than just see – we assume. For a Muslim girl, it is absolutely forbidden. The trick works – a little too
well.
When the Muslim girl reappears, when the American girl is obliged to tell the truth, the real tragedy
has taken place. The American mother, in a sort of psychological competition with her ex-husband, just
plainly runs the Muslim Pakistani father over and kills him. A ridiculous competition between the two
American parents. An outrageous decision to kill the Muslim father, because he is Pakistani (the police
are rather gross about it), or he is a Muslim, or just plainly a non-Caucasian person, neglecting the fact
that he is speaking Urdu like most people in Pakistan, and Urdu is an Indo-European language. More
Caucasian than that you die. American racism leads to absurdity when it is reduced to the color of the
skin or other superficial differences.
But what’s left at the end? A body. Two liars, the two girls, and the parents going to prison probably
for quite a long period of time, both together, or one – the father – with a lighter sentence because he
was only an accessory in the hit and kill with the car his ex-wife was driving. A drama that is nothing but
the direct production of societal dysfunction in the USA: racism, divorce, absence of parental guidance
for teenagers, absence of school guidance too on such personal questions as having pre-marital sex for
a Muslim girl, etc.
It could have been a little bit deeper, but the only objective is to trick the audience into believing the
Muslim girl has been killed by the American girl. It is easy to make the trick work, though, of course, any
wise audience knows there will be a final twist in the storyline. But true enough, the mother of the
American girl was entirely tricked into believing the Muslim girl had been killed by her own daughter, so
much tricked that she starts telling the police she believes the Muslim and Pakistani father is abusing,
meaning incest and rape, his daughter, just like that out of the blue. Luckily, the police are not entirely
blind, but not clear enough to prevent the crazy opportunistic vengeance of the American mother.

3. VERSION FRANÇAISE
Un film étrange et choquant à bien des égards. L'adolescente principale de ce film a quinze ans.
Elle est la fille de parents divorcés, et cette division crée en elle un cas de double allégeance
conflictuelle, ce qui la fait ne plus être sûre de ce qui est vrai et de ce qui est mensonge. Sa petite amie
adolescente a à peu près le même âge. Elle est la fille d’un père pakistanais donc musulman – nous
supposons – et vivant seul,. La jeune fille pakistanaise décide d'organiser avec sa petite amie
américaine un scénario bizarre dans lequel la jeune fille pakistanaise disparaît pendant quelques jours
pour pouvoir aller voir son petit ami et faire un peu plus que simplement le regarder – nous supposons.
Pour une fille musulmane, c’est absolument interdit. L’astuce fonctionne – un peu trop bien.
Quand la jeune fille musulmane réapparaît, quand la jeune fille américaine est obligée de dire la
vérité, la véritable tragédie a eu lieu. La mère américaine, dans une sorte de compétition psychologique
avec son ex-mari, renverse carrément avec sa voiture le père musulman pakistanais et le tue. Une
compétition ridicule entre les deux parents américains. Une décision scandaleuse de tuer le père
musulman, parce qu'il est pakistanais (la police est plutôt lourde à ce sujet), ou qu'il est musulman, ou
tout simplement qu'il n'est pas de race blanche dite caucasienne aux USA, négligeant le fait qu'il parle
ourdou comme la plupart des gens au Pakistan, et l'ourdou est une langue indo-européenne. Plus
caucasien que ça, tu meurs. Le racisme américain conduit à l’absurdité lorsqu’il est réduit à la couleur
de la peau ou à d’autres différences superficielles.
Mais que reste-t-il à la fin ? Un corps. Deux menteuses, les deux filles, et les parents vont
probablement aller en prison pour une période assez longue, tous les deux ensemble, ou l'un d'eux – le
père – avec une peine plus légère parce qu'il n'était que complice du délit de meurtre avec la voiture du
père de la jeune fille américaine, voiture que son ex-femme conduisait. Un drame qui n'est que la
production directe de dysfonctionnements sociétaux aux USA : racisme, divorce, absence
d'encadrement parental pour les adolescents et adolescentes, absence d'encadrement scolaire aussi
sur des questions aussi personnelles que les relations sexuelles avant le mariage pour une jeune fille
musulmane, etc.
Cela aurait pu être un peu plus profond, mais le seul objectif est de faire croire au public que la
jeune musulmane a été tuée par la jeune américaine. Il est facile de faire fonctionner l’astuce, même si,
bien sûr, tout public avisé sait qu’il y aura un rebondissement final dans le scénario. Mais il est vrai que
la mère de la jeune fille américaine a été complètement flouée en lui faisant croire que la fille
musulmane avait été tuée par sa propre fille, à tel point qu'elle a commencé à dire à la police qu'elle
pensait que le père musulman et pakistanais abusait, c'est-à-dire inceste et viol, sa fille, comme ça à
spontanément et sans prévenir, comme si cela allait de soi. Heureusement, la police n'est pas
totalement aveugle, mais pas assez clairvoyante pour empêcher la folle vengeance opportuniste de la
mère américaine.
