Nothing to say, or so little. No religion has nothing to do in any country where it is not “native.” Anyone has the right to believe what they want, and to get affiliated to any church they want, provided they are free to get out of it the same way. But no organization has the right to colonialize a country into a compulsory, or heavily recommended religious or political order. This film shows how ridiculous it is to try to make India Christian when it has a dominant religion that is at the very least 30 centuries old. The film shows how the objective of cultivating the vegetables they need to live in this nunnery is perverted after a while and flowers only are cultivated, and why should they cultivate vegetables when the local population can provide them at no cost at all. That’s the advantage of colonialism. But then Catholicism becomes a masquerade.

2. DEBORAH KERR – NARCISONEGRO – BLACK NARCISSUS –
1947
A typical colonialist film just before the fall of India from British control. It is absolutely regrettable to
show it anew thanks to a remastering that should never have been performed.
Catholic nuns trying to establish a new convent in India. Only women, absolutely isolated in some Indian
environment, under the authority of one little rajah or noble person known as the general. One obnoxious
Britisher IS making fun of the girls all the time.
To establish them in a proper “environment” the church chose the ex-harem building of the local noble
family, totally isolated and from which escape is impossible. Of course, it is easy to see that the harem
building is going to be haunted for these women who are married to Jesus, haunted by evil, desire, and
temptation that they will never be able to control.
And it is a failure. One nun decides to go away but she is prevented from doing it, and in the fight that
follows, she falls from the top of the cliff to her own death. Freedom in death. She more or less decided to go
because she felt, or imagined, she was in love with the Britisher who is a cynical person and sends her to
hell, and sure enough, even if her death is accidental, hell is the final destination.
Why on earth do we have to bring such archaic films out of their closets?

Un film colonialiste typique juste avant la chute de l’Inde du contrôle britannique. Il est absolument
regrettable de le montrer à nouveau grâce à une remasterisation qui n'aurait jamais dû être réalisée.
Des religieuses catholiques tentent de fonder un nouveau couvent en Inde. Uniquement des femmes,
absolument isolées dans quelque milieu indien, sous l'autorité d'un petit rajah ou personnage noble connu
sous le nom de général. Un Britannique odieux se moque tout le temps des filles.
Pour les installer dans un « environnement » adéquat, l’Église a choisi l’ancien harem de la famille
noble locale, totalement isolé et d’où il est impossible de s’échapper. Bien sûr, il est facile de voir que le
bâtiment du harem va être hanté pour ces femmes mariées à Jésus, hantées par le mal, le désir et la
tentation qu'elles ne pourront jamais contrôler.
Et c'est un échec. Une religieuse décide de s'en aller mais on l'en empêche, et dans la bataille qui
s'ensuit, elle tombe du haut de la falaise jusqu'à sa propre mort. Liberté dans la mort. Elle a plus ou moins
décidé de partir parce qu'elle sentait, ou imaginait, qu'elle était amoureuse du Britannique qui est une
personne cynique, qui l'envoie en enfer, et bien sûr, même si sa mort est accidentelle, l'enfer est la
destination finale.
Pourquoi diable devons-nous sortir des films aussi archaïques de leurs placards ?
