YAM YAM GOOD CATHOLIC PRIEST FLESH
The Gestalt is French, the three colors of the French flag in proper order, blue, white, and red, plus the three mottoes of the French Republic, Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity, both patterns being spread onto Europe, France, Switzerland, Poland, and a few others like England that will never be reached. It has little to do with love, but it has all to do with vengeance and maybe some divine natural justice
Blue means epiphany in repairing the damage caused by a dead husband. White means the epiphanic vengeance against a dissatisfied oversexual wife who tried to get rid of her husband to have legal lovers. Red is an epiphanic resurrection of a retired judge lost in spying on his neighbors and is led to repair what he did though no material harm had been caused.
And it all ends up with the intervention of God’s justice from ahigh in the form of a storm that capsizes a ferryboat between Calais and Dover killing hundreds of people and saving seven, all the epiphanic actors of the three films. Kieslowski who, as indicated in his name, likes snowboarding, or skiing, on scabrous and unethical situations, tries to be the Archangel Gabriel though he only is Christopher, to punish the bad ones (1,400 innocent victims who are not innocent since they did not repair the evil they had caused one way or the other) and redeem the epiphanically repentant. I am sure this filmmaker is eating one pound of priest flesh every morning for breakfast.

THE THREE COLOURS
TRILOGY – 1993-94
The three films together in a trilogy are dealing with hypocrisy in life and the punishment for it.
In BLUE, a very successful composer dies with his daughter in a car accident and his wife survives
because a witness helps her, and only her, out of the car. The husband was still alive, but the witness did not
help him. No indication about the girl. The widow decides to get rid of everything from her husband, to
destroy his career. But she discovers he has had a mistress, and this mistress is pregnant with a boy. She
changes her strategy and recuperates everything to enable the mistress to raise the son within the context of
his father and his widow, I guess, but also within the author’s rights of the father. She is not really punishing
her husband, but she is making him pay and everything right that he did not make right initially. She even
reconstitutes an important piece of music for some European celebration that she had tried to destroy at first
and delivers it to another composer for him to finish it and arrange what had been done already.
In WHITE, a Polish male hairdresser marries a French female hairdresser. The wife does not get
enough consummation of the marriage. She requires and obtains a divorce. Then the man goes back to
Poland, develops some illegal business, and is successful. Then he organizes his death and burial, and his
will gives everything to his ex-wife. She accepts and comes to Poland for the burial. The ex-husband
reappears in her life, consummates the wedding, and disappears again. Then the ex-husband, under a fake
identity, lets the police know about the illegal business and she ends up in prison in Poland.
In RED, a student and advertising model in Geneva nearly kills a dog and brings her back to her owner
who rejects both the girl and the dog. The girl takes the dog to a veterinarian and then brings her back to the
owner. She discovers he is spying on his neighbors’ telephone calls. She clearly says she disagrees with this
practice. He then goes to the police, denounces himself, and ends up in court since the neighbors decide to
sue. She comes across him again and she manages to get some of his history and how his wife died. Then
she has to go to England. She uses the trains and ferries, not a plane. The ferry boat goes through a storm,
3. and it capsizes with more than 1,400 passengers dead; but seven survivors, all of them being the people
concerned by the three films. This ending is Machiavellian and is nothing but tinkering about.
The film is shot in a very special way with a lot of camera traveling but within apartments or settings with
many corridors and so on, real labyrinths. As for this shooting, it is quite typical of Kafka, hence the
Machiavellian actions of the characters are embedded in some Kafkian settings with a fully vengeful
perspective. The slight intervention in Warsaw (second film) with a priest and some allusions to the Catholic
church there make it also fully vengeful against the moralistic preaching and controlling of people’s minds by
priests who should have no authority over individuals. Yet no allusion is made to the rotten characters these
priests might be. The films being produced in France, the allusion to a catholic priest is enough to bring to
mind the rottenness of some of these priests, essentially with young children, particularly young boys. The
presence of the priest in the film is enough to be the smoke of a deeper fire.
