DOWNTON ABBEY HAS REACHED EXTINCTION It was a series of great value, deeply historical and sociological, but the last two films are disappointing. The last but one with the visit of the King was of a banal formal and pompous cavalcade but with some slight interest in that quaint English monarchy. But this latest opus is at most a way to pass two hours without thinking too much. Disappointing. Sad. No, really, the small little secret of this aristocratic family that has to lie to cover up – and keep – their privileges, though they cannot repair their leaky roof. So, they let a film be produced in the building for a good sum of interesting money. Note we are not told anything about it, particularly how much it is. The acme of hypocrisy is reached when they discover the Earl of the Abbey is not the son of his father and hence has no blood right to be the Earl of this Abbey, and his children have even less right than him. So, lie, lie again, and lie always, to keep your privileges. This is done the way it could be done in a pulp novel about the promiscuity of a few teenagers with one girl getting pregnant and she cannot say who the father is. Luckily, we have DNA nowadays (NAD in text language).

2. DOWNTON ABBEY II
A NEW ERA – 2022
The film will nurture the nostalgic minds of people who admired the long saga because it really gave a
caustic vision of the extremely class-divided life of the aristocracy in England, mostly outside London, hence
in the boonies. Differences between farmers (never landowners because the cultivator of the land in England
in the period concerned and still today works on the land of a landlord, not on his (and today her) own land.
Then the people in the village or small-town next door are hardly considered, except for an election, or with
the ex-Irish activist who married one daughter and became presentable and started a car business (he is not
a member of the aristocracy per se) in the small town. But mostly the servants of the Earl’s palace with a real
and strict hierarchy from the butler at the top, the king of the downstairs kingdom, to the simplest maid
cleaning corridors, stairs, and hygienic facilities. The kitchen people are set apart. The same hierarchy exists
in the family itself with the absolute authority of the earl who often forgets to consult the members of the
family, including his American wife.
This final or latest episode is centered, at the very end, on the death of the grandmother, the mother of
the earl, with some dubious discussion of a love affair she had with a French aristocrat that implies the earl is
not the son of his father, but the son of this French aristocrat. Funny. She denies of course, despite the
dates, and luckily no DNA tests yet. No cast-iron proof or evidence. Ah Ah !!! Aristocrats and hypocrisy. Sure
enough, he would be at once deprived of the earl title, and the whole legitimacy after him as for the title
would be in shambles. Not the property since the property is attached to a physical person, but all that goes
along with the title, like being a member of the House of Lords, and other privileges that are attached to the
title and not the person. Ah Ah !!! Hypocrisy and aristocrats.
Apart from that the cinema episode, the shooting of a film in Downton Abbey only to recuperate a big
sum of money to repair the leaking roof, is superficial and uninteresting. It is entertainment and nothing else.
Disappointed that the social and cultural dimensions of this series are thus dropped and replaced by
some entertaining scenes with here-and-there good sentences like the last words of the grandmother on her
death bed: “Stop talking! I can’t hear myself die.” That’s cultural! That’s social! That’s enlightening!
I hope the subtitle is not the announcement of a new era, but the closing decision to bring the old era to
an end.

3. VERSION FRANÇAISE
Le film nourrira les esprits nostalgiques des gens qui ont admiré la longue saga car elle donnait une
vision vraiment caustique de la vie extrêmement divisée en classes de l'aristocratie en Angleterre,
principalement en dehors de Londres, donc dans les bois et marécages ruraux. Les différences entre les
agriculteurs (jamais propriétaires terriens, car le cultivateur de la terre en Angleterre à l'époque concernée et
encore aujourd'hui travaille la terre d'un propriétaire terrien, et non sur sa propre terre don c à lui (et
aujourd'hui parfois à elle, la cultivatrice). Ensuite, les gens du village ou de la petite ville juste à côté n'est
guère envisagée, sauf lors d'élections ou avec l'ex-activiste irlandais qui a épousé une des filles de la famille,
est ainsi devenu présentable et a lancé une entreprise automobile dans la petite ville (il n'est pas membre de
l'aristocratie en tant que tel : vous pouvez épouser une fille de la famille, mais vous n’entrez pas dans le clan
familial défini par le sang et rien que le sang, ah ah !!! voir plus loin). Et avec les domestiques du palais du
comte avec une hiérarchie réellement stricte depuis le majordome au sommet, le roi du royaume d'en bas,
jusqu'à la plus petite servante qui nettoie les couloirs, les escaliers et les installations hygiéniques. Les gens
de cuisine sont considérés à part. La même hiérarchie existe dans la famille elle-même avec l'autorité
absolue du comte qui oublie souvent de consulter les membres de la famille, y compris son épouse
américaine.
Ce dernier ou final épisode est centré, à la toute fin, sur la mort de la grand-mère, la mère du comte,
avec une discussion douteuse sur une histoire d'amour qu'elle a eue avec un aristocrate français qui
implique que le comte n'est pas le fils de son père, mais le fils de cet aristocrate français. Drôle. Elle nie bien
sûr, malgré les dates, et heureusement pas encore de tests ADN disponibles. Aucune preuve bétonnée. Ah
Ah !!! Aristocrates et hypocrisie. Effectivement, il serait immédiatement privé du titre de comte, et toute la
légitimité après lui quant au titre serait en ruine. Non pas la propriété puisque la propriété est attachée à une
personne physique, mais tout ce qui va avec le titre, comme être membre de la Chambre des Lords, et
d'autres privilèges qui sont attachés au titre et non à la personne. Ah ah !!! Hypocrisie et aristocrates.
A part ça l'épisode-cinéma, le tournage d'un film à Downton Abbey pour récupérer une grosse somme
d'argent pour réparer le toit qui fuit, est superficiel et sans intérêt. C'est du divertissement et rien d'autre.
Déçu que les dimensions sociales et culturelles de cette série soient ainsi abandonnées et remplacées
par quelques scènes divertissantes avec ici et là de bonnes phrases comme les derniers mots de la grand-
mère sur son lit de mort : « Arrêtez de parler ! Je ne m’entends pas mourir. » Ça, c'est culturel ! Ça, c’est
social ! Ça, c'est lumineux et digne du Siècle des Lumières !
J'espère que le sous-titre n'est pas l'annonce d'une nouvelle ère, mais la décision finale de mettre fin à
l'ancienne ère.
