1. 186 PARFUMERIE Tendances / Trends
À la cour des parfums The court of new women fragrances...
Majestic fl owers
Whilst 2013 was crowned by the popu-larity
of complex and abstract fl oral bou-quets,
2014 has been all about compo-sitions
that focus more on the key fl owers
traditionally used in the perfumery sector
in what has been a return to a certain
traditionalism.

Les fl eurs souveraines
L’année 2013 fût sacrée par des bouquets
» oraux complexes et abstraits, 2014 an-nonce
des compositions recentrées sur
les » eurs incontournables de la parfume-rie,
retour à un certain classicisme.
•‡ Sa majesté la rose, le jasmin son
prince
La rose a fait un retour remarqué
dans la cour olfactive, d’abord dans
le nom, puis dans les compositions
• Her Majesty the Rose, Crown Prince
Jasmine
The rose has made a noteworthy re-turn
to the olfactory court, not just in
terms of name but also in a number
compositions in which it reigns su-preme,
including Rosabotanica (Ba-lanciaga),
Roses (Chloé), Roses et
Reine (L’Occitane), Very Irresistible
L’eau en Rose (Givenchy), Velvet Rose
(D&G) or Paris Premières Roses (YSL).
This generous fl ower of fl owers is often
accompanied by jasmine, as is the case
with Dior Addict EDT, Dolce (D&G) and
Cerrutti 1881 Bella Notte for Her, in
which it shares the limelight.
• Crown Princess Orange Blossom
Whether as an essential oil (neroli) or an
absolute, orange blossom really did ex-perience
its moment of glory in 2013. It
continued to maintain a presence in this
year’s spring olfactory sphere and is deli-cately
showcased in Burberry Brit Rhythm
for Her, demonstrating a more solar di-mension
supported by ylang ylang in
Terracotta le Parfum (Guerlain) and even
in Alien Eau Extraordinaire (Thierry
Mugler).
• Precious fl owers bow out gracefully
Lady Tuberose, Sweet Pea and Gardenia,
all favourites in 2013, are withdrawing
from the court with a sense of pride,
As leaders in the selective perfumery sector, alcohol-based
female fragrances are fi nding themselves
faced with some stiff competition. Raw materials,
variations, fl anker products.... what will be next in
the quest to topple rivals with one fragrant backhand
swing? Cinquième Sens, under the expert guidance of
Isabelle‰Ferrand, has revealed its olfactory analysis*
of the hit products launched in the fi rst half of 2014.

Eau Extraordinaire (Thierry Mugler).
•‡ Les précieuses tirent leur révérence
Dame Tubéreuse, Pois de senteur et Gar-dénia,
les favorites de 2013, quittent la cour
avec erté, laissant néanmoins un sillage
capiteux sur leur passage : avec Jour
d’Hermès Absolu, ou Karl Lagerfeld For Her.
Les fruits : fi dèles cavaliers des
fl eurs
Plus que jamais, les fruits accompagnent
les » eurs dans ce bal parfumé, puisque
40 % des » euris ont une facette fruitée
poussée.
•‡ Changement d’apparat
Rocher) ; Flower in the air (Kenzo).
fraise dans Lady Million Eau my Gold (Paco Ra-banne),
although not without leaving a heady sillage in
their wake, as demonstrated by Jour d’Hermès
Absolu and Karl Lagerfeld For Her.
Fruits: loyal knights of the fl owers
Never before have we seen so much fruit ac-companying
fl owers in this fragrant dance,
with 40% of fl oral compositions now incorpo-rating
a strong fruity dimension.
• A change of ceremonial dress
The fruits have chosen to don a fresher, more
natural style than was previously the case this
season, shedding their sweet, indulgent gar-ments
in favour of a veil of citrusy top notes,
from Ange ou Démon Le Secret (Givenchy)
and Cerisier en Fleurs (Yves Rocher) to Flower
in the Air (Kenzo). The result is a fresher, jui-cier
interpretation with grapefruit often taking
centre stage.
• A profusion of colour
It is diffi cult to single out one fruit in particu-lar
from this wonderful display of exoticism
- how do you choose between peach, apple
and pear? Solinotes such as those found in
Moment de Bonheur L’Eau (Yves Rocher),
which incorporates an element of mild apple
producing an olfactory effect that more clo-sely
resembles the peach, are indeed beco-ming
increasingly rare. Various fruits can be
found fi ghting to steal the show within the
same fragrance in a way that puts even the
proudest of fl owers in the shade, such as the
coconut, passion fruit, mango, pineapple and
strawberry accord of Lady Million Eau My
Gold (Paco Rabanne), almost enveloping the
most fragile of fl owers, such as the lily of the
valley in Amor Amor L’Eau (Cacharel), with
a powerful cocktail of apricot, blackcurrant,
passion fruit, peach and pear, which makes
one wonder whether we might soon see a
fruity family admitted to the court...
• The green note - keeper of the shadows
Whilst it might be keeping something of a
low profi le in this parade, the green note
is nevertheless more pronounced than
is usually the case, as demonstrated by
the blackcurrant bud of Miss Dior Bloo-ming
Bouquet, the fi g of Rosabotanica
(Balenciaga) and even the representation of
lotus in the hyacinth of L’Eau d’Issey Ode to
Nature. It also guarantees the authenticity
of the fl ower thanks to its natural, springlike
feel, as demonstrated by the notes of lily of
the valley substantiated by the green touch in
Pleats Please L’Eau d’Issey Miyake, in what is
a trend that is refl ected both in the note itself
and in the colour of the packaging.

3. 188 PARFUMERIE Tendances / Trends
Orientals and chypres - from
Classical to Baroque
• A modern interpretation
Traditional interpretations of these two fami-lies
are out this semester, with heavy sillages
comprising whirlwinds of patchouli, moss and
balms fi nding themselves sidelined in favour of
more refi ned, modern versions.
• Softness and consistency
As far as chypres are concerned, white musks
are the must-have accessory to achieve an ele-ment
of fullness and cleanliness, as demons-trated
by Modern Muse (Estée Lauder), with
a musky fl oral chypre that is along the same
lines as For Her (Narciso Rodriguez), making
it ideal for the American market. Other new
launches include La Panthère (Cartier), descri-bed
as a fawny chypre incorporating leathery
musks as well as a note of pear, refl ecting the
current trend.
These two chypre fragrances alone represent
but a very slim proportion of the launches seen
in the 1st semester, but there is, nevertheless, a
coherent relationship between the product
launched and the positioning in light of the
only two modern chypres among the top 20
N°29- Septembre / Octobre 2014 Expression Cosmétique
French sellers, namely Coco Mademoiselle
(Chanel) and Miss Dior (Dior).
Fickle sugar
Having briefl y been neglected by fruity fl oral
compositions, the indulgent dimension is ma-king
a magnifi cent comeback in the oriental
family. Indeed, vanillin and maltol (caramel)
are wooing composition bases to the point
of inebriation, creating high-impact top notes
and an icing sugar-like cloud effect, from
Extatic (Balmain) and Manifesto L’Éclat (YSL),
where tonka bean is crystallised to create a
sugared-almond effect, to Loverdose Tattoo
EDT (Diesel) with its creamy rice pudding ele-ment,
to name but a few. Finally, there is the
sometimes fi ne line between modern chypres
and orientals, as demonstrated by Idylle Duet
Rose Patchouli (Guerlain) or even La Vie est
Belle EDT (Lancôme), in which the two families
are thrown together in an intoxicating waltz.
Sublime communication...
• Power and wealth
Black and gold feature heavily in the visuals
and packaging seen in the 1st semester, not
to mention the names of the corresponding
fragrances, including Liquid Gold Euphoria
(Calvin Klein), The One Gold (D&G) and
Gold Edition (Roberto Cavalli), in a trend that
undoubtedly stems from the invincible success
of the Million duo by Paco Rabanne and the
golden incarnations thereof. The notion of
wealth is indeed widely conveyed, though in a
somewhat more subtle manner with so-called
“Couture“ products such as the Couture col-lection
from Versace, La Petite Robe Noire Eau
de Parfum Couture (Guerlain), Lanvin’s Jeanne
Couture Birdie and Elie Saab with Elie Saab Le
Parfum L’Eau Couture bringing the parade to
a close.
• Divine designations
There is a defi nite air of spirituality in the
market, from Parfum Divin (Caudalie),
Glowing Godness (Jennifer Lopez), Modern
Muse and Bronze Godness Eau Fraîche
Skinsent (Estée Lauder), Nirvana, Eliza-beth
et James, Heavenly and Angels Only
(Victoria’s Secret) and Enchanted Midnight
Spell (Chopard) to Lady Million Eau My
Gold (Paco Rabanne) and Dahlia Divin,
(Givenchy) in what might be described as a
heaven-sent air of sanctity.
dans L’eau d’Issey Ode to Nature à travers
de nuage de sucre glacé : Extatic (Balmain) ;
Euphoria (Calvin Klein), The One Gold (D&G) ;
Gold Edition (Roberto Cavalli). Tendance cer-tainement

5. The Version-Concentration
waltz
The proportions of new product launches to
extensions of existing lines remain stable in
relation to last year (see graph on p.187).
• Holy water!
As is customary before the summer, Eaux
versions have been appearing, from the
Summer Splash collection (Cacharel), com-prising
Noa, Catch Me and Amor Amor
L’Eau, See by Chloé Eau Fraîche, Eaude-moiselle
Eau Florale (Givenchy), Prada
Candy Eau Florale and Me L’Eau (Lanvin)
to Alien Eau Extraordinaire and Angel Eau
Sucrée (Thierry Mugler). Few of these
refreshingly-named fragrances contain a
really pronounced citrus element, favouring
instead the signifi cant presence of fresh fruits.
• The leaders and their entourage
N°29- Septembre / Octobre 2014 Expression Cosmétique
The past two years have also witnessed
an acceleration in the number of launches
(fl ankers and variations) pertaining to
key fragrance lines. La Vie est Belle
(Lancôme), for example, is already avai-lable
in four different versions (Eau de
Parfum, Eau de Parfum Légère, Eau de Toi-lette
and the imminent Absolu)! The same
is true of its friend La Petite Robe Noire
(Guerlain), which is available in Eau de
Parfum, Eau de Toilette and Eau de Parfum
Couture versions after just two years on
the market, with Manifesto also following
in their footsteps with its Eau de Parfum,
Elixir and L’Éclat (EDT) versions. This is
one trend that looks set to stick around,
with market research undertaken notably
by the Fragrance Foundation showing
that consumers welcome variations of
fragrances and are even particularly
fond of such olfactory nuances! Whilst
oriental fragrances (11%) are fl ourishing
and establishing their place among the
top sellers in France (La Vie est Belle
(Lancôme), La Petite Robe Noire (Guerlain)
and Manifesto (YSL)), fl orals continued to
dominate the new product launches in the
selective distribution sector in the fi rst half
of 2014 (79%).
What do the end of 2014 and 2015 have
in store for us? Will variation products
manage to establish their supremacy?
Will vanilla and the sweet notes associa-ted
therewith take the reins and reign su-preme
over the fl orals? Watch this space
for the next episode in the new-product
battle for the throne over 2015...
*Analysis of 182 listed fragrances out of a total of
349 launches recorded.
•‡ Divines appellations
Parfum Divin (Caudalie) ; Glowing Godness
(Jennifer Lopez) ; Modern Muse et Bronze
Godness Eau fraîche Skinsent (Estée
Lauder) ; Nirvana (Elizabeth et James) ;
Heavenly et Angels only (Victoria’s secret),
Enchanted Midnight Spell (Chopard) ; Lady
Million Eau my Gold (Paco Rabanne) et
Dahlia Divin (Givenchy). Une aura de sain-teté
qui semble tombée du ciel !
La valse des Versions -
Concentrations
Entre nouveautés et déclinaisons de lignes
déjà existantes, les proportions sont
stables par rapport à l’année dernière (Cf.
graphique p.187).
•‡ Ô mon Eau‡!
Comme à leur habitude en période pré-esti-vale,
les versions Eaux ont perlé. La collec-tion
Summer Splash (Cacharel) avec Noa,
Catch me et Amor Amor en versions Eau,
See by Chloé Eau Fraîche, Eaudemoiselle
Eau Florale (Givenchy) ; Candy Prada Eau
Florale, Me L’Eau (Lanvin) ou encore Alien
Eau Extraordinaire et Angel Eau sucrée
(Thierry Mugler).
» eurs ? La suite de la bataille des nouveau-tés
pour le trône, en 2015… ■
* Analyse portant sur 182 parfums répertoriés sur un
total de 349 lancements comptabilisés.
