This document discusses using social bookmarking tools like Delicious and Diigo to support inquiry-based learning. It describes how the author set up bookmarking sites for history students to tag and share sources they found online. Students found this helpful for seminar preparation and developing research skills. While some engagement issues arose, most students felt it improved their thinking and ability to find different types of sources. The author reflected that social bookmarking can effectively support inquiry-based learning when combined with specific tasks and modeling from instructors.

The document discusses curriculum development and interpretation by teachers. It references different models of curriculum including the Tyler model which involves determining educational purposes, experiences, organization, and evaluation. The Saber-Tooth curriculum satire is described, highlighting how curricula need to change to meet the needs of learners and society. Views of key thinkers like Tyler, Stenhouse and Freire on curriculum are also mentioned. The curriculum in South Africa was discussed in relation to apartheid and the need for the new curriculum to address past wrongs and prepare all learners.
Critical pedagogy influences teaching approaches and requires teachers to continually learn, relearn, and unlearn through listening, learning, reflecting, and acting. Diversity provides advantages like new perspectives and opportunities to challenge assumptions. A teacher relocating to an area with less diversity may struggle with student needs, family needs, high-stakes testing, and controlled curriculum unless they make changes to their instructional techniques and strategies. The process of critical pedagogy involves defining questions, critically reflecting on practices, and acting to introduce new approaches or materials.
This document discusses the key concepts of critical pedagogy including learning through discourse, critical consciousness, honoring lived experience, praxis, and acknowledging hegemony. It then summarizes four articles related to critical pedagogy:
1) Why Doesn't This Feel Empowering? discusses Ellsworth's critical pedagogy course aimed at understanding institutional racism. It highlights tensions between rationalist assumptions of critical pedagogy and lived experiences.
2) The Souls of White Folk examines how whiteness has become globalized and created a global condition in its image, challenging the notion that some societies are unproblematically democratic.
3) Revolutionary Pedagogy in Post-Revolutionary Times

This document provides an overview of Brazilian educator Paulo Freire's life, works, and educational philosophy. It discusses his influential books Pedagogy of the Oppressed and Education as the Practice of Freedom, in which he advocated for a liberating education based on dialogue that helps the oppressed gain critical consciousness to question society. The document also reviews some criticisms of Freire's work and emphasis on concepts like praxis, authority versus freedom in education, and the role of love in the learning process.
Freire describes the traditional "banking" model of education as problematic because it treats students as empty vessels to be filled by the teacher. He argues this approach does not truly educate students and prevents them from developing their own ideas. Freire proposes an alternative "problem-posing" model where both teachers and students learn from each other through dialogue. In this model, students are active participants in their education rather than passive recipients, allowing them to gain a deeper understanding of concepts and relate learning to real life. Freire believes this approach better facilitates true knowledge and liberation of thought.
Paulo Freire was a Brazilian educator and philosopher born in 1921. He is known for his theories on critical pedagogy and ideas of "conscientization", or developing a critical consciousness. Freire believed that education should empower the oppressed and promote dialogue between students and teachers. He saw education as a practice of freedom that could transform society. Freire authored many influential books on critical pedagogy and his theories have shaped educational philosophies worldwide. He died in 1997 after making significant contributions to educational thought.
Pedagogy of the oppressed is one of the best books I have read this summer. This is a book review of sorts, though I do not highlight all aspects of the book. I only make reference to chapter 2.
Paulo Freire was a Brazilian educator and philosopher known for his influential work on critical pedagogy. He was born in 1921 in Brazil and worked as a teacher and school director early in his career, developing his theories on liberating education for the oppressed. In 1964, a military coup imprisoned him for 70 days due to his leftist views. He went on to publish influential books like Pedagogy of the Oppressed and Pedagogy of Freedom. Freire worked internationally as an advisor and advocate for education reform focused on empowering marginalized groups until his death in 1997.
Paulo Freire was a Brazilian educator who developed critical pedagogy. He was born into poverty and experienced hunger as a child due to the economic impacts of the Great Depression on his family. This influenced his view that education should empower the oppressed and poor. He argued that teaching should reject the "banking system" where students are treated as empty accounts to be filled by teachers. Instead, it should recognize that students have their own knowledge and life experiences. The goal of education, according to critical pedagogy, is to lessen human suffering and promote justice and equality.

Slides from a talk at the Vermont Library Association College & Special Libraries Conference, October 2015. Abstract: Our presentation focuses on the use of primary sources in library instruction to inspire students to think around issues of injustice and oppression. Following remarks on our chapter-in-progress for a book on Critical Library Instruction, the session will be devoted to introducing/discussing Critical Pedagogy and its influence on library instruction. Because Critical Pedagogy is dependent upon decentering the lecturer in favor of a participatory and community-driven style of learning, we hope this session can act as a forum for our colleagues to share ways in which they’ve incorporated facets of Critical Pedagogy into their instructional practice, ask questions about Critical Library Instruction, and offer any critiques they have of Critical Pedagogy/Critical Library Instruction. Delivered with Sean Leahy, Instruction & Learning Assessment Librarian, Champlain College.

MongoDB in a scale-up: how to get away from a monolithic hell — MongoDB Paris...Horgix
This is the slide deck of a talk by Alexis "Horgix" Chotard and Laurentiu Capatina presented at the MongoDB Paris User Group in June 2024 about the feedback on how PayFit move away from a monolithic hell of a self-hosted MongoDB cluster to managed alternatives. Pitch below.
March 15, 2023, 6:59 AM: a MongoDB cluster collapses. Tough luck, this cluster contains 95% of user data and is absolutely vital for even minimal operation of our application. To worsen matters, this cluster is 7 years behind on versions, is not scalable, and barely observable. Furthermore, even the data model would quickly raise eyebrows: applications communicating with each other by reading/writing in the same MongoDB documents, documents reaching the maximum limit of 16MiB with hundreds of levels of nesting, and so forth. The incident will last several days and result in the loss of many users. We've seen better scenarios.
Let's explore how PayFit found itself in this hellish situation and, more importantly, how we managed to overcome it!
On the agenda: technical stabilization, untangling data models, breaking apart a Single Point of Failure (SPOF) into several elements with a more restricted blast radius, transitioning to managed services, improving internal accesses, regaining control over risky operations, and ultimately, approaching a technical migration when it impacts all development teams.
