Segmentation and indexation of complex objects in comic book imagesChristophe Rigaud
In this PhD thesis presentation, we review, highlight and illustrate the challenges related to comic book image analysis in order to give to the reader a good overview about the last research progress in this field and the current issues. We propose three different approaches for comic book image analysis that are composed by several processing. The first approach is called “sequential” because the image content is described in an intuitive way, from simple to complex elements using previously extracted elements to guide further processing. Simple elements such as panel text and balloon are extracted first, followed by the balloon tail and then the comic character position in the panel. The second approach addresses independent information extraction to recover the main drawback of the first approach, the error propagation. This second method is called “independent” because it is composed by several specific extractors for each elements of the image without any dependence between them. Extra processing such as balloon type classification and text recognition are also covered. The third approach introduces a knowledge-driven and scalable system of comics image understanding. This system called “expert system” is composed by an inference engine and two models, one for comics domain and another one for image processing, stored in an ontology. This expert system combines the benefits of the two first approaches and enables high level semantic description such as the reading order of panels and text, the relations between the speech balloons and their speakers and the comic character identification.

This document provides an overview of key Twitter metrics that can be used to analyze a Twitter account's performance. It defines common metrics like engagements, retweets, mentions, favorites, hashtags, potential reach, potential impressions and others. It explains how to calculate engagement and the difference between mentions and replies. The document also outlines basic and advanced ways to analyze metrics to optimize account engagement, measure audiences, campaigns and influence. It provides examples of analysis reports and tools for reporting.
Companies are increasingly embracing consumer technologies like smartphones and tablets in the workplace. Over 70% of companies have changed business processes to capitalize on this trend. Employees are using mobile devices for both basic and advanced work functions. As a result, companies are seeing benefits like improved collaboration, sales, and time to market for new products. However, some gaps remain between business and IT leaders on how to best manage these changes.
Enterprise Social Use and Perceptions by MicrosoftAref Jdey
The document summarizes the findings of a Microsoft survey on enterprise social media use. Some key findings include:
- Respondents in Mexico, Turkey, and China were most likely to use social tools to share and review documents, while those in Japan, Switzerland, Austria, and Germany were least likely.
- Women tended to use social tools more for communication, while men used them more for networking and research.
- Productivity loss was cited as the top restriction reason in 9 countries, while security concerns were cited in the remaining 23 countries.
- Increased productivity from social tools was most prevalent in China, India, Turkey, Mexico, and Russia.
An Accenture survey of 3,700 doctors across 8 countries found significant increases in healthcare IT usage over the past year. The number of doctors routinely accessing clinical data about patients seen elsewhere increased 42% globally. 91% of doctors are active EMR users. Countries like Singapore saw the largest increases in areas like accessing clinical data (53% increase) and receiving test results electronically (40% increase) as it implements a national healthcare record system. The survey found that digital tools are becoming more routinely used globally, and that the "digital doctor" is here to stay.
The document discusses the rise of enterprise social networks and their benefits for companies. It notes that while only 3% of companies report being fully networked and seeing substantial benefits, those companies that do utilize social technologies internally can double their productivity through better communication and collaboration. The document advocates that companies build true internal communities using enterprise social networks to empower employees, connect people and resources, and help the company adapt to changes. It provides examples of how some companies have successfully implemented enterprise social networks.
This document discusses the negative effects of social media that have become more prominent. It begins by highlighting how social media has negatively impacted people's behavior by causing them to constantly focus on their mobile devices rather than engage with their real-world surroundings. The document then analyzes ten serious consequences of social media for modern society, such as addiction, security issues, economic deficits, and more. It concludes by proposing ways to address these problems, including promoting concepts like "Slow Tech" that encourage more mindful social media use.
The document summarizes findings from a 2012 study by Google and Compete on how patients use digital tools in researching and selecting hospitals. Some key findings include:
- Patients use a variety of digital sources during their research, including search engines, hospital websites, health sites, and social media. Search engines are the most commonly used resource.
- Patients spend significant time researching online before booking appointments, visiting multiple hospital websites. Digital content heavily influences their final decision.
- Mobile devices are an important part of the research process, with patients using smartphones and tablets to search on the go. Those using mobile are more likely to watch online videos and book appointments.
The document provides an overview of digital influence and marketing trends in 2013 based on surveys of over 6,000 influencers, 1,200 consumers, and 150 brand marketers. Some key findings include:
- Brands spend the majority (75%) of their digital budgets on display, search, and video advertising, with only 10% going to social media including influencer outreach. Within social media budgets, over half goes to Facebook.
- While brands don't allocate much budget to blogs and influencers, consumers view them as highly influential sources of information and for shaping purchase decisions.
- Influencers are most active on their own blogs, where they have been publishing for many years, typically operating 1-5
This document summarizes the findings of a survey of over 2,700 professionals about staffing and practices related to social media. Key findings include:
1) 65% of respondents handle social media tasks in addition to other duties rather than having a dedicated social media team. Teams of 3 or fewer people handle social media exclusively for many organizations.
2) Measurement of social media efforts is an area of dissatisfaction, with 69% unhappy with their methods.
3) Budgets and salaries for social media positions show wide variation and most did not increase in 2012-2013.
4) Facebook is the dominant social media platform used, while ownership of social media efforts is spread across marketing, PR and communications departments
This document discusses six technology trends for 2013 and beyond. It begins by introducing the trends and noting that economic conditions will continue to shape the technology landscape while presenting new opportunities. The document then summarizes six individual trends: 1) How products and services are getting to know users through behavioral data; 2) How new open business models are challenging traditional businesses; 3) How information overload is changing consumer behavior and the need for curating information; 4) How the cloud is changing the basis of competition in hardware; 5) How the online environment is making personal brands more important; and 6) Issues around data privacy and ownership that will be important.
This document provides an overview of social business and how organizations are applying social approaches. Some key points:
- Social business involves embedding social tools and practices into organizational activities both internally and externally. This allows for improved knowledge sharing, collaboration, and customer experiences.
- Leading organizations are applying social business to create valued customer experiences, drive workforce productivity and effectiveness, and accelerate innovation.

The document summarizes research on how physicians use the internet and search in their clinical practices. It finds that the internet is the top health resource for physicians, with 86% using it to gather medical information. Physicians access the internet daily, with 58% accessing it more than once per day. Search engines, particularly Google, are the most commonly used online resource, with 81% of physicians using search engines and 92% using Google specifically.
