SELECCIÓN DEL RODAMIENTO
Bearing selection
Consideracionesgenerales
Cada rodamiento cuenta con unas características
específicas que determinan para qué disposición
es más apropiado. De igual modo, las condiciones
particulares de cada aplicación y sus componentes
establecen unos requisitos previos variables.
Considere siempre consultar a
los especialistas de MBA, que aportarán asistencia
técnica para escoger el rodamiento adecuado para
cadanecesidadprecisa.
Generalconsiderations
Each bearing has its own specific attributes that
determine which placing is it most suitable for. At
thesametime,theuniqueenvironmentalconditions
of each application and its components establish
several varying previous requirements. It is posible
to outline a general basic guide, but a sole rule that
defines universalselectionstepsdoesnotexist.
Therefore, several variables must be taken into
account while approaching each case, both intrinsic
and contextual: component and self design, load
ratings, speed, internal clearance, lubrication,
cleaning, estimated service life, mounting,
assembly… Always consider contacting the MBA
specialists team, who will provide technical support
in order to choose the right bearing for each precise
request.
Gather as much information as posible you could
provide to the technical service. Any kind of specific
data could be useful, from the bearing type and
its series (or shape and measures as well) to the
machine technical details or the environmental
conditions.Picturescouldbehighlyhelpful.
Furthermore, it is desirable to call upon qualified
personal to carry out the assembly or disassembly
process. Both actions require considerably careful
managing, with a previous exhaustive study of
the extraction and installation. The units must be
handled carefully, using appropiate tools only. It is
recommendedtorunanoperationaltestsrightafter
the assembly, as well as conduct periodic reviews to
checktheunitstatus.
A proper bearing selections removes premature
malfunctioning and avoids negative consecuences,
suchasexpensivefailures,productiondowntimesor
evenaccidentsatwork.
Measures
The shaft diameter where the bearing is going to be
assemblied is usually the most relevant aspect that
must be taken into consideration. according to the
equipmentwhereitwillbemounted.
Loadratings
The amount of load and its direction have an
importantroleinthetypeandsizeofthebearing.As
a general rule, roller bearings are used for high load
ratings, while ball bearings are more suitable for
mediumorlightloadratings.
Most bearings are prepared to absorb certain axial
load. When the axial load rating is significant, single
or double direction thrust bearings should be used,
depedingontheloaddirection.Whenradialloadand
axial load coexist, the bearing contact angle must
be measured. It is possible to ocasionally assemble
coupledbearingstoabsorbthecorrespondingloads.
The dynamic load rating refers to the load received
by the bearing while operating. If the rotation
speed is very low, there are long stop or the load is
intermittent,thenthestaticloadratingiswhatmust

Alignment

able to hold only very little misadjustment between
both elements. In case certaing misalignement
angle between the shaft and the housing exists, a
self-aligning bearing (also known as “spherical”or
“oscillating”) must be installed, as they offer a higher

SELECCIÓN DEL RODAMIENTO
Bearing selection
Velocidad
discreto.
Determinadas aplicaciones requieren rodamientos
incrementarsurigidez.
Los rodamientos MBA pueden incluir obturaciones
integradas. Esta solución evita la penetración de
contaminantesqueperjudiquensurendimiento.
Speed
The maximum speed that a bearing can perform
at is determined by the maximum temperature it
can reach while operating, which at the same time
is defined by the friction it produces during its
rotation. When friction is low less heat is generated,
andthereforeitisallowedtoworkathigherspeed.
Otherfactors
With very few exceptions, it is prefered that a
bearing produces the lower noise level possible.
This feature is key it the bearing is to be installed in
speciallyquietenvironments,orinmachinerywhere
asubtlebackgroundoperationispreferable.
Certaion applications demand high speed bearings
that can perform with great accuracy and without

On the other hand, if the assembly and disassembly
frequencyishigh,itispossibletochosseadetachable
bearing. This way the inner rings could be mounted
independently from the outer rings. Bearings with
cylindrical bore are usually easier to install. When
the shaft has a cone shape, a tapered bore bearing
can be used, or a cylindrical bore bearing with its
correspondingadaptersleeveaswell.
While operating, a bearing is subject to load that
could cause minimum elastic deformations. In
certainsituationsitisrecommendedtoapplyagiven

rigidityisincreased.
MBA bearings may incorporate integrated seals.
This solution prevents contaminating agents to
penetrate inside the bearing structure and damage
its performance, and also allows for a proper
lubrication.

TOLERANCIA
Tolerance

These error limits are internationally stanterdized
by a ranking system, and it changes according to
the size of each bearing. The higher the level in this
ranking,themorelimitedthetoleranceis,andsothe

In general terms, Normal class tolerance allows
satisfyingfeaturesinmostofapplications.However,
reduced tolerance ranges help improving the
bearing performance and extend its service life.
Certain applications demand these high precision
bearings, due to performance requirements or
mountingdesignrestrictionsamongotherreasons.
High precision bearings are subject to more strict
controles during manufacturing and machining
processes,eventhoughthereareseveralparameters
that can not be classified within the tolerance
standard measures. These factors may include cage
type, ball precision, torque, surface finish or radial
clearange.
Depending on the country several standard grades
may be found to arrange tolerance values, although
most of them are interchangeable, as shown in the
equivalencetablebelow:
Bearing tolerance covers three aspects related
to precision: dimensional precision, machining
precisionandrunningprecision.
Dimensionalprecision
When a bearing is to be installed in a shaft or
housing, the dimensional accurarcy establish the
allowed error limit for the external dimensions.
The measures evaluated are the bore diameter, the
outer diameter, the width, the mounted bearing
with,thebevelandthecone.
Machiningprecision
In order to establish a reference point from which
the manufacturing accuracy can be estimated,
the machining precision defines the variation in
measures related to a single bearing, and then this
bearing in relation to others. The variation is the
range between the higher and the lower value
within the same series. The parameters considered
are bore diameter and the bore average diameter;
the outside diameter and the average outside
diameter; the raceway width; and the variation in
the ring width. These measures are particularly
relevant when the bearing is going to be installed in
specialhousings.
Runningprecision
The running precision is the most relevant scale
to estimate the accuracy for both vibrations and
properalignmentduringtheassembly.Thismeasure
evaluates the gap between the inner rings and the
outer rings, as well as the squareness of both bore
andoutsidediameterinrelationtothesidefaces.

JUEGO INTERNO
Internal clearance

o inexistentes.
adecuadodelrodamiento.
The internal clearance of a bearing is the maximum
possible offset of one of its rings in relation to the
other.Thismeasuredisneccesarytoabsorbtheload
byadjustingtheringsduringtheassembly.
Duetothis,oncethetypeandthesizeofthebearing
has been selected, a proper internal clearance must
bechoosetoavoidproductdeformationsduringthe
instalation and compensate the dilatation variation
betwieen the inner ring and the outer ring while
operating. Other factors have also impact on this,
suchasnoiselevelsorheatgeneration.
According to the type of bearing, this distance
is measured in radial direction (internal radial
clearance) or axial direction (axial internal
clearance). Furthermore, a distinction between the
initial internal clearance and the operating internal
clearancemustbemade.Theinitialinternalclearace
is higher due to the contractions and expansiones of
theringsoncetheyarerunning.
For standard work conditions, it is recommended to
use the Normal clearance. When there are notable
differences between the assembly conditions and
the operating conditions, an internal clearance
higher or lower than Normal must be choose
accordingtoeachcase.Thesebearingsareidentified
with sufixes C2 and C1 (gradually lower than
normal)orelseC3,C4andC5(graduallyhigherthan
Normal).
Each bearing configuration requires a positive
operating clearance (the most usual situation)
or negative, depending on the application. For
example, in applications that have impact load or
strong vibrations it is recommended to go for a
higherinternalclearance.However,forsmallmotors
and in environments with noise restrictions a lower
internalclearanceshouldbeused.
Even if the internal radial clearance is usually
displayed, certain types of bearings show their axial
internal clearance, as it is most relevant for the
applicationstheyaredestinedfor.Withinthisgroup
there are spherical ball bearings and spherical
roller bearings; tapered roller bearings and angular
contact ball bearings (when they are coupled); and
fourpointcontactbearings.
Preload
In certain circumstances a preload is applied to
the bearing. This procedure is implemented in
applications where the bearing is operating at high
speeds while subjected to light or non-existent
load. This way a minimum load is ensured, aiming
to provide a negative clearance that increases its
rigidity and accuracy, preventing from damages
caused by sliding movements within the rolling
elements.
Through applying a preload the exact bearing
position in the shaft is achieved, and so its precision
isincreased.Italsoallowstodecreasewearing,since
the rolling elements remain in its correct position. It
is also used to minimize noise and vibrations while
thebearingisrunning.
The total amount of preload, and the process to
measure it, must be obtained with extreme caution
by a qualified technician. It is imperative to evaluate
carefully the operating conditions and the goal of
the preload to ensure the correct performance of
thebearing.

NIVELES DE VIBRACIÓN Y RUIDO
Vibration and noise levels
Cuando se encuentra en funcionamiento, un
rodamiento siempre produce cierta vibración.
Estas vibraciones son ocasionadas por las
fuerzas de contacto que se mueven alrededor
del rodamiento, originando oscilaciones en el aro
exterior.
proceso permite detectar cualquier posible defecto
oanomalíaenlafabricación.
During operation, a bearing always generates
some vibration. These vibrations are caused by the
contact forces that are constantly moving around
the bearing, leading to oscillations in the outer
ring. The main consequence of this fact is noise
generation. While it is operating, the bearing makes
a sound similar to a constan purring. This sound can
not be completely removed, although it could be
considerablyminimized.
It is essential to mantain vibration levels within
the acceptable margins in order to avoid major
inconveniences. If there are excessive vibrations,
there is a chance premature failures can occur
and maintenance costs could be increase to a
large extent. Furthermore, the machinery energy
consumptionmaybecompromised.
When choosing a bearing, noise levels must be also
taken into account. Even although this factor does
not have any effect on the bearing performance, it
must indeed be considered the application where it
will be mounted. Certain applications require very
quiet functioning, such as air conditioner systems or
medicalequipment.
In contrast, other work environments demand
certain sound levels to be kept, since it helps
distinguishing if the machinery is running and the
bearing is running correctly. In this case the number
of bearings that the machine uses and that will be
operating simultaneously must be given proper
consideration.
It is recommeded to carry out an inspection on
the bearing if non usual sounds or vibrations are
detected, such as squeals, buzzings, crackings,
arrhythmic hammering, etc. Incorrect lubrication,
contaminanting agents inside the bearing, excessive
misalignementregardingtheshaft,aninappropriate
assemblyorevenracewaymanufacturingerrorscan
be found among the causes that originates these
sounds.
Aming to ensure proper performance all along
its service life, each and every MBA bearing is
subjected to advanced noise and vibrations tests,
after manufacturing them and before starting the
distributionprocess.Thisprocedureallowstodetect
anypossibleflaworabnormalityduringproduction.

LUBRICACIÓN Y MANTENIMIENTO
Lubrication and maintenance

aceite.
Es imprescindible que la lubricación mantenga
una consistencia adecuada, sin cambios bruscos ni
excesivos.Cuandosereblandecenenexcesopueden
ocasionarse fugas, mientras que si se endurecen
por encima de lo recomendable el rozamiento
incrementa, llegando incluso a detener la rotación
porcompleto.
No debe experimentar cambios excesivos.

fundamentales incluyen el tipo de rodamiento;
funcionamiento; el tipo de grasa o aceite aplicado;
agua,etc.

between the different elements that comprise
the bearing, prevent it from gradually wearing
and protect it against corrosion. This task must be
carriedoutwithprecisionandcautiontoensurethat
thebearingoperateswithreliability.
Within the market there is a wide range of greases
and oils that are manufactured for this purpose. In
this regard, the selection relies essentially upon the
operating conditions of each particular application.
The amouts are also varidable, according to the
temperature reached by the bearing while running
orifitsusedasasealingsystem.
Due to factors such as contamination or aging,
it is mandatory to periodically check lubrication,
filtering,addingorchangingthelubricantdepending
onwhatisrequiredineachcase.
Greaselubrication
One of the great advantages of using greases is that
it becomes easier to retain it inside the bearing. This
kind of lubrication is highly effective to lock out
humidity,waterandothercontaminatingagents.
The excess of lubrication causes an increase of the
working temperature. As a general rule, the bearing
must be completely filled, while the housing has just
to be filled partially (between 30% and 50%). If it
operates at low speeds, the housing could be fully
filled.
Oillubrication
Oil lubrication is applied in cases where grease
lubrication is not possible. It may be used if the
bearing is going to work at high speeds, or also if
the temperatures reached while operating are
considerably high. It is also recommended if the
adjacent elements in the housing or the machinery
use oil as their lubricant system. Furthermore, it
is generally preferable to use oil lubrications for
bearingsthatrequirehigherviscositywhile
operatingatlowerspeeds.
It is essential that the lubrication mantains a proper
consistency, with no excessive nor sudden changes.
When it undergoes excessive softening some
leakage may occur, while if it is subjected to too
much hardening the friction increases, which may
even stop the rotation completely. To avoid this, it
is recommended to carry out cleaning tasks and
periodically inspections at least once a year. If the
load is high increase the frequency of these reviews

The lubricant renewal interval of a bearing depends
of multiple factors, which are specific for each case.
These key variables include the bearing type; its
size; the speed and the operating temperature; the
type of grease or oil applied; the space surrounding
the bearing and its environment; the presence of
contaminatingorcorrosiveagentsandwater,etc.
First and foremost, do not wait until the lubricant
is degraded to carry out the replacement, as there
is a high risk of permanent damage in the bearing.
Therelubrication process must be run when the

OBTURACIONES
Sealing
Lasobturacionesenlosrodamientosseempleanpara
agentes externos y producir desgaste y fricción
Debe considerarse
compacta.
Bearingsealingsareappliedtopreventcontaminant
agents and humidity to access between the rolling
elements and the static parts. Moreover, it also
should keep the lubricant inside the bearing.
The seals must be versatile, since they have to
be effective in a broad temperature range and
withstand the deformations caused by the irregular
surfaces, and at the same time display a high
resistance against both load and external agents
whilecausingminimumwearingandfriction.
Different factors come into play in the sealing
selection, so it is crucial to gather all possible
informationprevioustothebearinginstallation.The
typeoflubricationthatwillbeused(greaseoroil),the
amount of contaminant agents in the environment,
the shaft position an its misalignement degree, the
operatingspeed,etc.shouldbeconsidered.
Despite their reliability, it must be beared in mind
that the external seals could produce losses even
greater than the ones caused by the bearing itself.
This is way it is necessary to used non-contact
seals under extreme conditions, when the bearing
is operating at high speed and reaches high
temperatures.
Certains series are manufactured with integrated
seals in one or both sides. These bearings
are distributed with prelubrication and are
maintentance-free, which provides a longer service
life and are a compact economic solution for this
issue.

MONTAJE Y DESMONTAJE DE RODAMIENTOS
Bearing installation and removal
Elprocedimientodemontajedeunrodamientodebe
ser efectuado y supervisado exclusivamente por
personal debidamente cualificado.

a mano y debidamente ordenadas.

precaution and under strict cleaning conditions, so
the correct developmet of the whole process and its

First step is to remove any burring from all the
elementsandcleansurfacesofthemachinedpieces.
Once again, it must be checked the accuray of every

to avoid possible errors that could not be undone
later.
Keep the bearing in its original package until the
precise mouting moment, so it will be protected as
long as possible. Remove the antioxidant coating,

The inner ring should be mounted first since it has
the tightest fitting. Be careful with the alignement
wheninstallingtheouterringthen,usinganadapter
sleeve if possible. Next the seating has to be slightly
lubricatedbeforeplacingit.
Adjust small bearings with light uniform tapping
with a hammer on an sleeve or a bushing. For non
dismountable bearings an intermediate disc is used
to support the side face, whose surface should
be in the same plane. This is also recommended
for spherical bearings. Ocasionally mechanical or

For large dimensions bearings a previous heating
is required. It should no exceed 125 C in order to
prevent changes in its dimensions, and it should

exclusively appropiate heat inductors in order to
avoidrisks.
Taperedborebearingsassembly
They are always mounted with tight fitting. The
fitting level is not defined by the tolerance, but by
the amount of draft in the tapered shaft seating
or the clamping sleeve. The original internal radial
clearance is reduced during the assembly, and this

After the installation it is necessary to apply the
correct lubricant. Before resumen the machine
activities, carry out a working test to ensure that
the bearing is allowed to work normally and check
both noise and temperature. This tests should be

MONTAJE Y DESMONTAJE DE RODAMIENTOS
Bearing installation and removal
Desmontaje

Removal
If the bearings are going to be reused no required
strenght should be applied to remove them. If
they are dismountable bearings, the ring with the
rotatory elements and the cage can be separated
independently. If not, the ring with the loosest ring
should be removed first. In case of tight fitting it

Cylindricalborebearingsdisassembly
Small bearings can be unmounted with ligh
hammer taps or with an extractor. By oil injection
the dissasembly of large size bearings that require
greater strenght become easier. There are special
heaters for cylindrical roller bearings that can

Taperedborebearingsdisassembly
If they are mounted on an clamping sleeve, the
clamping nut must be loosen and removed from
the bearing, using a hammer or drift punch on the
inner ring face. If they are installed on withdrawal
sleeves, first remove the axial clamping devices,
then screw a nut in the sleeve thread and tight it
until it is extracted. If the threaded parts are laid out
a bushing will be required. The taks becomes easier
