Index-Based Livestock Insurance in northern Kenya: An analysis of the pattern...ILRI
This document discusses a study analyzing the patterns and determinants of purchase of index-based livestock insurance (IBLI) in northern Kenya. It finds that drought is the leading cause of livestock mortality in the region and causes highly covariate, catastrophic herd losses that are largely uninsured. The study designs an IBLI index using satellite-derived normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) data to indicate forage availability over rangelands. The index covers five separate regions and different time spans. An impact evaluation uses a two-way stratification design across 16 locations, varying the presence of an existing cash transfer program and an insurance education game.
