2. Key Trends 1/3
www.s-trom.ch
Battery Storage
Market is taking off and becomes more and more
competitive.
Biomass & Biogas
Branch of biogas produced from household waste is
shrinking in some regions, where on the contrary, the
market of biogas produced from bio-waste is steadily
increasing.
Cleantech
Still very active with investments in energy and environment
start-ups.
Nanotechnology is also rising (e.g. 600 Mio. € investment
through Nano2017 plan).
Energy Efficiency
Increase of government subsidies in several regions (“e.g.
European Energy Efficiency Mortgage”).
Some historical power generation companies doing external
growth by acquiring companies specializing in building
technology.
3. Key Trends 2/3
Energy Management System
Interest of end user for smart meter is increasing.
Blockchain, big data, and anticipation of the actions and
behaviors of the users, consumers and producers are getting
interest.
Hydrogen for New Energies &
Mobility
Big programs intend to deploy massively hydrogen powered
vehicles and stations (e.g. HyFIVE et H2ME in Europe).
Hydropower
Pressure on the competitiveness of hydroelectric production
in some areas due to competition against coal power
generation.
Offshore Wind Floating wind turbine is seen as a growing niche.
Oil & Gas
CAPEX of some big firms have been slashed by the oil price
and Megaprojects may be more difficult to get.
www.s-trom.ch
4. Key Trends 3/3
Solar
Extremely competitive market, some players do not survive.
New players appear, sometimes in the form of a partnership
e.g. between a producer of Chinese solar panels and an
installer who is rather an engineer.
Thermal Power Generation
Coal Power Generation decreasing in China.
Nuclear: ageing nuclear fleet in some regions may increase
electricity price on long term.
Transmission & Distribution
Electrical network will become more complex, more
decentralized.
Complexity of combining micro-units of production will
more massive power stations.
Challenge to turn to new business models for T&D
companies.
Blockchain is particularly interesting in a decentralized
environment with a large volume of small transactions.
Concept of collective self-consumption promotes the
development of microgrids.

Master Plan for Vietnam Gas Industry Development to 2025 approved. 23.01.2017
The Master Plan aims to develop the Vietnamese gas industry, to collect 100% of the gas
production from the fields operated by national company PetroVietnam and by foreign
contractors, to achieve a domestic gas production of 17 to 21 bcm/year in 2026-2035. Vietnam
bets on gas-fired power plants, which should consume 70% to 80% of total gas supply (LNG
imports and domestic production)

China's coal production fell by 9% in 2016. 23.01.2017
On a yearly basis, domestic coal production fell by 9% in 2016. This marks the third consecutive
annual drop as the country is shifting away from this high-emission fuel, mainly by increasing
strongly the role of renewable energies and reducing the contribution of coal in power
generation.
