3. Context (2012-2014)
• Beef production contributes to GHG emissions and to
carbon sequestration
• Some mitigation practices are identified without
dissemination
• No tool has been developed for GHG advice on farm
• Farmers are not really aware about GHG and carbon
sequestration
• Nothing has been done to increase awareness and
promote sustainable beef production

4. LIFE BEEF CARBON
4
… 2,000 farmers, 4 countries
Reducing the beef carbon footprint by 15%
COP 23 – BONN – November 10th 2017
5. LIFE BEEF CARBON, key objectives
• Develop a common framework (on GHG and livestock) in
the 4 countries
• Educate farmers and technicians, develop tools and
methods to approach the link between GHG and practices
• Create an European beef carbon footprint observatory
• Identify, test and promote the low carbon practices in a
network of innovative farms
• Launch a low carbon national/European dynamic involving
farmers, agricultural advisors
5COP 23 – BONN – November 10th 2017
6. A program in alignment with other initiatives
6COP 23 – BONN – November 10th 2017

11. 2- Educate farmers and technicians
Individual and collective training sessions
• 2,000 farmers
• 190 technicians/advisers
11COP 23 – BONN – November 10th 2017
12. 3- An European farm observatory – 2,000 beef farms
Implementing the methodology and tools on a huge farm sample
• Calculating the beef carbon footprint on 2 000 farms
• Creating a national/European beef observatory with 2,000
demonstrative beef farms in contrasting production contexts
• Determining the environmental efficiency of farms according to
production systems and practices
• Presenting to farmers the results and farm performance level in
comparison with references
12COP 23 – BONN – November 10th 2017
13. 4- A network of innovative farmers
170 innovative farms to apply the best practices
• Including the carbon assessment in the advising approaches
and create the link with technical aspects
• Demonstrating the feasibility of mitigation practices in real
conditions
• Evaluating the technical, environmental and economic
benefits of adopting mitigation practices at farm level after 3
years
• Federating the European beef carbon farmer's network

the main production systems existing in the four countries
• Describing the socio-economic effects
• Describing the partnership strategy to be put in place for the
wide spreading of a beef carbon action plan
15COP 23 – BONN – November 10th 2017
17. Summary – LIFE BEEF CARBON
• A European framework on GHG and livestock
• A huge partnership from European to regional
levels
• A high level of dissemination
• A concrete application of actions in commercial
farms
• A proactive strategy leaded by the beef sector to
reduce carbon footprint and increase beef
sustainability
