• Consommation mondiale ~18 TW (1012 W, puissance)
• Energie consommée par an = 158,000 TWh ÷ 24 h ÷ 365 = 18 TW

Biogas hydrogen-assisted upgrading to biomethane
Source: SBC Energy Institute
1Biomass feedstock is a maize silage of 5kWhch/kg of dry matter, cultivated with a land yield of 0.63MWch per km²; 2the anaerobic
digestion of maize silage requires heat and has a total efficiency of 68.7%. Heat is usually provided by burning some of the methane
produced. Therefore, recycling heat from methanation increases the biomass-to-biogas efficiency of the unit; 3thermochemical
methanation at 77.7% hydrogen-to-methane efficiency; 4Includes solid digestate and other energetic gases such as ammonia etc.

Some hydrogen (H2) basic maths
" H2 is the most light element in universe
" 1 kg H2 11,1 Nm³ H2
" The production of 1 kg H2 via water electrolysis requires
• +/- 10 l demin water (+/- 20 l of tap water)
• +/- 57 kWh electricity
" 1 kg H2 allows you to drive +/- 100 km with FCEV
" The energy content of 1 Nm³ H2 (0,0899 kg) is equivalent to 0.34 l gasoline
" The energy content of 1 kg H2 (11,1 Nm³) is equivalent to 3,77 l gasoline
" Electrical power = Hydrogen flow / AC power consumption (all in)
• Example (HyStat-60-10): 60 Nm³/h * 5.2 kWh/Nm³ = 312 kWe
39,4 kWh (HHV)
33,3 kWh (LHV)

Key conclusions
" Fuel Cells and water electrolysis are mature and proven
technologies. Technology and market developments are very
promising (efficiency, costs, flexibility, MW scale), especially for
large scale applications
" Hydrogen Energy offers many synergies with other sectors
(power, gas, mobility, chemistry, water) and with CO2
" There is a need for an appropriate regulation at EU and national
levels and a need for demonstration projects (at large scale)
" Major global companies have made strategic moves towards
hydrogen technologies (Toyota, Hyundai, EON, Alstom…)
" The energy sector is undergoing a major transformation…
green hydrogen is part of it !
" We are ready !
