La rivière et la chenille - The River and the Caterpillar
1.
2. Upon a branch that overhung
a river’s sparkling flow.
A caterpillar inched along ,
he seemed to go so slow.
He lifted up his hairy neck
to view a wondrous sight
A bird that soared upon the
breeze,
so carefree in its flight
“Oh how I wish that I could fly
up there amongst the trees
And like the bird, from place
to place
I’d glide along with ease.”
Sur une branche surplombant
Une rivière au cours tranquille
Par un beau matin de printemps
Se promenait une chenille.
Cahin-caha elle cheminait
Quand soudain en levant les
yeux
Elle vit un oiseau qui volait
Libre et serein, dans le ciel bleu.
"Comme j'aimerais pouvoir
voler!
Se dit-elle, découragée,
Et laisser le vent m'emporter
Ici ou là, selon mon gré !
3. “But alas I’m forced to
travel
in my earthbound
weighted way,
Amid the jeers and
laughter
of those who stop to say,
‘Oh look at him, a hairy
worm who crawls upon
his tum
A creature of the lowest
form, I’m glad that I’m
not one.’”
Mais je suis forcée sur la
terre
De ramper avec tout mon
poids
En écoutant les mots amers
De ceux qui se moquent de
moi:
- Regardez ce gros ver poilu
Qui sur son ventre se
déplace!
Qu'il est vilain et ridicule
Je n'aimerais pas être à sa
place!"
4. Then suddenly from inside of
him
some silky threads came out
“Oh my”, he sighed, “what is
this now,
more troubles I must bear?
A sticky coat is covering me,
I can’t get anywhere!”
And so beyond his will or wish
he spun himself a room
And in the darkness, fastened
tight,
he slept in his cocoon.
Un jour, quelques fils soyeux
Sur la chenille sont apparus.
"Oh non! Qu'est-ce qui
m'arrive encore?
Combien devrais-je
supporter?
Ce truc collant couvre mon
corps,
Et je ne peux plus avancer!«
Car malgré elle il arrivait
Qu'elle se tissait un cocon
Et un soir, bien enveloppée,
Elle s'endormit pour de bon.
5. The River sighed and thought,
“Oh worm,
your hardship’s a mere trifle
For I know what you’ll become,
I’ve often seen the cycle.”
“But look at me and there you’ll
see
what sadness really means,
For no children play or splash in
me,
too shallow are my streams.”
Alors la rivière soupira :
"Ah, chenille, cela n'est rien,
Je sais ce que tu deviendras
Ce cycle, je le connais bien!
Mais je te dis : regarde-moi,
Tu verras un triste malheur!
Aucun enfant ne joue en
moi
Car je n'ai pas de
profondeur!"
6. Just then from off the river’s
bank, a beaver took a swim.
With fresh cut branches in his
mouth, depositing them in.
The river scowled,
“What is this mess?
You’re blocking up my flow!
I’ll just wash it all away,
I must stay pure, you know.”
But again the beavers brought
more limbs
and anchored them in place
Branches upon branches
it was a mighty race.
Mais des berges de la rivière,
Un castor se lança à l'eau
Où il déposa sans manières
Des branches et des brins de
fagots!
" Que fais-tu? cria la rivière,
Arrête, tu vas bloquer mon
cours!
J'emporterai dans ma colère
Même ton bois le plus lourd!«
Mais le castor continua
Son travail impassiblement ;
Branche après branche il
apporta,
Puis les ancra solidement.
7. The river flowed with all its force
to wash the sticks away
But the beavers just would not
give up
and soon the branches stayed
And last upon the very top the
beavers put in place
The branch that held within its
limbs the caterpillar’s case
The river grumbled all the while,
“My flow’s been interrupted,
And I’m swelling up so big and
fat I feel like I am glutted!”
De toute sa force la rivière
Essaya de tout balayer,
Mais lui ne se laissa pas faire
Et ne voulut pas renoncer.
Alors le barrage tint bon.
Pour finir le castor y mit
La branche portant le cocon
Avec la chenille endormie.
Et la rivière se lamentait :
"On a interrompu mon flot,
Je suis toute grosse et
gonflée,
Et j'ai augmenté de niveau!"
8. From high above the sun smiled
down
upon the wooden dam
And warmed the sleeping
caterpillar
inside its silken strands
As days went by at last he woke
and saw a speck of light
And struggled through the
opening with every bit of might.
Oh, such pain, for the hole was
small,
and he barely made it through,
But once outside he noticed
something wonderful and new!
Avec bienveillance le soleil
Fit briller d'en haut ses rayons
Et réchauffa dans son sommeil
La chenille avec son cocon.
Un beau jour elle se réveilla,
Et apercevant une clarté
Dans l'ouverture elle
s'engagea
Pour tenter de se libérer.
Dieu, que le trou était petit!
De toutes ses forces elle
combattit!
Quand elle réussit à passer,
Ah! Quelque chose avait
changé!
9. For there upon his sides,
two wondrous forms unfolded,
Something he’d never seen
before
that in the dark were molded.
“What are these”, he gasped,
as he waved them in the
breeze
And suddenly took to joyous
flight, reaching for the trees.
The creatures gazed upon his
wings
which shone in brilliant color,
“I’m flying” he cried out for joy
and looked about in wonder
Car là elle vit se déployer
Dessus son corps, des deux côtés,
Deux formes garnies de splendeur
Qui la remplirent de stupeur !
"Mais qu'est-ce que c'est ?"
s'étonna-t-elle,
En les agitant doucement.
Et soudain elle ouvrit ses ailes
Et s'envola joyeusement.
Les créatures sous les cieux
Contemplaient ses couleurs si
belles!
"Je vole! Oh, comme c'est
merveilleux!"
Elle regarda tout autour d'elle.
