2. T
here!, said Grandpa Jake, as he finished tying Tristan’s
scarf. We’d better leave or we’ll be late.
Grandpa Jake read stories for a children’s book club at
the library.
V

3. As they went on their way, he whistled happily, holding
his storybook under his arm.
– What story are you reading us today? Tristan asked.
– Aha! laughed Grandpa Jake. That’s a secret!
4. At the library, Troy spotted
Grandpa Jake just before he came
in the door.
– He’s here! he called out happily, and
all the children sat down in their places and
became quiet.
– Hello, children! Grandpa Jake greeted them, coming
through the door.
5. – Good afternoon,
Grandpa Jake! the
children chorused.
– I have a special
story about a friendly
crab named Clip,
Grandpa explained,
settling down with his
book. Shall we
begin?
– Bonjour, Grandpère ! répondirent-ils
en chœur.
– Aujourd’hui, je
vais vous raconter
l’histoire d’un
crabe bien
sympathique
nommé Clip,
expliqua
Grand-père
tout en
s’installant
pour lire.
Êtes-vous
prêts ?
6. It was the day of the Clown Fish Parade. Clip and his
friends swam as fast as they could to the best spot to watch
the parade: Orange Eye Reef.
– Wait for me, Clip called out.
I’m so much slower than everyone
else! he thought sadly.
Camille, his mermaid
friend, held out
her hand.
– I’m
sorry, here,
let me help you!
Clip took her hand and together
they caught up with their friends, but he still felt sad.
t’aide ?
Clip lui prit la
main et, ensemble, ils
rattrapèrent les autres.
Toutefois, quelque chose
continuait d’assombrir ses
pensées.
7. My friends have to
help me keep up, I’m
just a bother to them.
The parade near
the Kingdom of
Shadda was the
highlight of the year.
First came the clown
fish doing stunts.
Next was a clown
fish band, and then
was a troupe of water
dancers. Clown fish
in the rear twisted
seaweed streamers into
flowing designs.
Je n’y arrive pas tout
seul.
8. – Wonderful! Camille exclaimed
happily. I wish I could join the parade!
– I’d want to be in the band, said
Old Budder.
– We could do stunts, shouted
Littleton, as he jumped over Shallo the
seahorse and landed on his head.
– I could make designs with
seaweed, added Goby.
– Let’s make our own parade,
Camille said excitedly. Let’s go
practice for our families!
– Magnifique ! s’exclama
Camille. Comme j’aimerais me joindre
au défilé !
– Moi, j’aimerais faire partie de
l’orchestre, dit le vieux Mondéo.
– Nous pourrions faire des
acrobaties, cria Léonie. Et, sautant
par-dessus Hubert, l’hippocampe,
elle vint atterrir sur son crâne.
– Moi, je pourrais faire
tourbillonner des algues, ajouta
Gobie.
– Et si nous montions notre propre
défilé, suggéra Camille, excitée par
l’idée. Préparons un spectacle
pour nos familles !
9. Everyone agreed and happily swam off to begin.
Everyone except Clip who said sadly,
– There’s nothing I could do in a parade.
Just then, a voice came from somewhere nearby.
– Help, oh, help! I’m stuck! It was a little clown fish from
the parade, tangled up in her seaweed streamer. She tried
to free herself, but the streamer was wrapped around her
fins and caught on a
piece of coral.
Tout
le monde
tomba
d’accord
corail.
10. Maybe I should help her, thought Clip. But I’m probably
too small and weak and couldn’t get her free. I shouldn’t
even try.
– Please, somebody help me! the
clown fish called again.
Maybe I should see what I can do,
Clip thought, and swam towards the fish.
– Hey, Clip called. Maybe I can get
somebody to help you.
– Can’t you try? the little fish started
to cry. Please don’t leave me, I’m scared!
10
Peut-être que je devrais lui porter
secours, pensa Clip. Mais je suis
sûrement trop petit, je n’ai pas
assez de force pour la libérer.
À quoi bon ?
– À l’aide, à l’aide ! supplia-t-elle à
nouveau.
ne me laisse pas toute seule !
11. – Well, I don’t think I’m strong enough, Clip replied. But
I’ll try. What’s your name?
– Tinsel, answered the clown fish.
– Alright, Tinsel, when I say pull, I want you to pull as
hard as you can, Clip told Tinsel. He braced his pincers on
the coral. One, two, three, pull!
Clip and Tinsel pulled, and in a moment the piece of
coral came loose, and the streamer untangled.
– I’m free! Thank you! said Tinsel gratefully, and gave
Clip a big hug.
– Hum ! Je
ne suis pas sûr
d’avoir assez de
force, répondit
Clip, mais je
vais essayer…
Comment
t’appelles-tu ?
– Damzelle, répondit la
petite poisson-clown.
11
12. – You’re
my hero! What’s
your name?
– Clip, he said softly, all of a sudden shy.
– How did you hear me? Tinsel asked.
– My friends and I were watching the parade, and I
stayed behind, Clip said.
– Well, I’m so glad, because you were able to save me,
Tinsel smiled.
– Tu es mon champion ! Comment t’appelles-tu ?
– Clip, dit-il à mi-voix, soudain intimidé.
– Comment as-tu fait pour m’entendre ? demanda
Damzelle.
12
13. But I’d better
get going.
Thank you,
Clip! Bye!
Clip had a happy
feeling inside as he went to find his friends. Perhaps he was
small, and couldn’t do everything his friends could, but he
could still help others.
C’est ainsi que tu as pu me sauver. Mais il faut que j’y aille.
Merci, Clip !
13
14. – Do you ever feel like Clip did? Grandpa Jake asked
the children.
– Yes, they answered, and Derek said, My big brother
can do lots of things, but I’m too small.
– It takes time to learn things, Grandpa explained.
But you can also do some things now. You can help your
daddy wash the car, or help your mommy cook.
14
15. You could put your toys away when you’re
finished.
– That’s right, Chantal smiled.
– I like to help, Troy added.
– That’s good, Grandpa Jake said.
It doesn’t matter if you’re small, you can
still help. We’ll see you next time, children!
– Goodbye, called the children, as Grandpa
Jake and Tristan headed home.
– You’re a wonderful grandpa, Tristan said
as they walked. Thank you for the stories.
– You’re welcome, said Grandpa Jake,
and I think you’re a wonderful grandson!”
