The piano is a 19th-century evolution of an older pianoforte that Beethoven tolerated or suffered from but probably hearing in his deafness the modern piano. Technically it was a revolution after the harpsichord and of course, all the organs going back to medieval times. For us in the West, the modern piano is Pleyel first in Aulteribe for George Onslow and the three days festival in September every year. The auditorium Salle Pleyel in Paris is connected to this brand of piano and is extremely vertical since this Pleyel piano was still sort of weak when compared to the present concert pianos we use. Then other brands will come, and playing on a Pleyel or a more recent brand name may be very different. Every year the pianists who take part in the Aulteribe Festival say it abundantly. It takes them one or two months to just learn how to use a Pleyel piano from the 1820-1830s. But the piano has become the most famous star of all concert halls and other large audience musical events.
In this piano revolution, salon music, music for the few well-off families and aristocrats plus their friends and relatives in their private but grandiose homes became a habit and this enabled women, I mean girls, to practice early with a piano teacher and quite a few could have become interesting performers or composers, but only very few did achieve anything in their life and yet after their death, they went back to the memorized oblivion of non-existence. When their scores had been kept by their families or some friends, we can today start rediscovering their music and we can also wonder what freedom and creativity they were allowed to develop and demonstrate in their very limited experience and performing life.

ABBÉ BOUDAL – LAURENT MARTIN – MÉLANIE BONIS
1.

ENGLISH VERSION
LAURENT MARTIN UNDER THE PAINTINGS OF
LÉON BOUDEL – AUGUST 12, 2023
No one is a prophet in his own country, but in music, Laurent Martin was a prophet in his
Livradois Forez and this music that he announced, defended, enriched with the names of many
forgotten women composers, or rather relegated to the silence of the corridors from the social
yacht of the industrial or commercial bourgeoisie of the 19th century and a good part of the 20th
century. Provided the 21st century be not that of who knows what revenge, but let it simply be that
of the rediscovery and the recapture of their particularisms, not simply notes and intervals but also
of a vision, an emotion, a dramatization of their mental universe. The risk is portentous after
movements like #METOO, that some men and some women should try to make these female
composers resurrected prophetesses after their death in profound silence during their life, at most
a kind of honor success in some salons leaving not much behind them that can last without having
to be rediscovered, upgraded, reinvented in some way.
Meeting Laurent Martin, at the piano as it should be, and at Olmet what’s more, in the church
recently classified as a historical monument in the process of being renovated, therefore of being
rescued before what could have been a full ruin, is a celebration in itself, a King's banquet. And
5. above all that, I was seated by organizers in the south stalls of the choir, and from there, I saw this
piano come to life once again with its master tamer who is far from having lost the slightest ounce
of his panache and virtuosity.
And this concert on August 12, 2023, sends me imagining what the piano could, maybe
should, bring to the whole world.
The piano, this recent instrument ultimately rising more
than descending from Beethoven's fortepiano, is the
Himalayas of music, the Everest of contemplation and bliss in
full mental and spiritual enlightenment.
The piano is the Kilimanjaro of diversity constantly
questioned and multiplied by the left or right hand, according
to the whims and desires of the composer, sometimes even of
the pianist who organizes his manual march on the keyboard
as he sees fit, or as he wants us to hear.
All the more reason, when you play music composed by
women, those women who didn't have the slightest chance of
getting up there, to the podium of recognition, unless it's with
their notes that don't seem to have any gender or sex, and yet is it really like that in a world where
musical standards are dictated by men? Didn't I hear a devil's tritone corrected in a concert at La
Chaise-Dieu in a work by a Flemish composer who thus protested against the Spanish colonization
of Flanders, which precisely justified this diabolical tritone? Is there anything more diabolical than
colonialism, all the more reason for a European province to be colonized by another European
country that believes itself to be the center of the world? Thick and heavy fire on these Flemish
marginals who want to dictate their linguistic identity against the Spanish of the famous inquisition,
in addition of course to their opposition to Latin. Who gave the right to anyone in La Chaise-Dieu’s
Festival to “correct” the Devil’s Tritone?
Women should compose the divisive anthem on the plight of gender minorities, and other
minorities, with an evil tritone every two bars. Thank You, Satan, for such an idea, which will never
be exploited I imagine. Devil’s tritones are so discordant!
Where the very male and masculine composers are jaded – “blasé” in the text, excuse my
French – even Mozart, by these sempiternal ascending notes and tones, sometimes pirouetting on
their knees or twirling a cheering baton, the female composers refuse imitation and let themselves
be carried away by the vertigo of the fall after the last note, the fall even lower than when the
ascension started, with the intoxicating madness of having risen to, descended from, and even
fallen oof that grandiloquent male grandeur.
Have you ever climbed to Lake Tahoe in California, and there, in bathing clothes, light and
short, the snow had not yet arrived, with a child on your back hanging on your shoulders, you
climbed on a steep rock in the shape of a promontory and contemplated the lake in which it is
recommended not to dive because the water becomes freezing at one meter, three feet deep. The
child comes down from your back and, also in a bathing suit, snuggles up against you because this
promontory makes him feel dizzy, but he does not want to close his eyes so as not to see anymore
because the spectacle is so beautiful when you are twenty-five or thirty meters, 80 or 90 feet above
the surface of the water. Dizziness becomes pleasure and even this child who must have been six
or seven years old experienced this more than intense pleasure, a prequel of adult bliss.
Here is Schubert, naive, innocent, childlike, contemplative, and of course viscerally
inexhaustible. The piano there is for him only the stick of the pilgrim in search of the star of life
which is only too often a simple ethical conversion of a vast black hole devouring stars precisely,
meaning with the precision of a dragon or a vampire.
6. Gabriel Fauré, the one forest of notes in which we can get lost as his name suggests, true
enough in French, makes us dread at each melodic turn the emergence of some frightening
monsters - as they should be –, some exciting and talentedly kidnaping and abducting sirens, and
yet they are only notes, still and always notes, a jungle of notes which do not cease to sound out
stony when scattering themselves, one by one, on the road of the musical pilgrim that I am.
Mélanie Bonis is like a very strong alcohol,
captivating in a way, even bewitching my mind. She
intoxicates you not with perfume or the fleeting vision of
a breast, but with an interior garden that she carefully
cultivates for herself and her loved ones, and this
intimacy will precisely justify her disappearance in 1937
for fifty years after she departs from here, according to
Laurent Martin, because she suffers from her intimacy
and her rather closed imaginary world, like its social
world, with in addition the explosion of the war which
oriented the world towards entertainment music
(concert, music hall, cinema, and many others and
soon video games and of course television). On the
other hand, we have scholarly music that sacrifices
sentimental and sensory intimacy to the too often
warlike and vindictive exhibitionism carried out by the
dramas of this 39-45 war and the barbaric colonial wars
that followed it. Indochina, Algeria, Vietnam, and many
others, and still today. Feelings other than patriotism,
absolute freedom, selfish individualism, and
insubordination as if the whole world were at the
service of the desires of each individual and not of the
community, all other feelings are banished or commodified. We live in a world where intellectual,
mental, and emotional intimacy has become synonymous with jaded, crippled cerebral
rheumatism. Either we are a bunch of raging satyrs, or we are basic cruel barbarians, or we are
exhibitionist voyeurs practicing rebellious insubordination in the form of insurrectionary riots. In the
mind, it is the dictatorship of all that is artificial like Artificial Intelligence or artificial paradises, and
in the simple social rape – if that is still social – the rape that Chopin so often knew how to evoke
by his violence on the keyboard and the devotion of the piano heresy, we are drowning in the full
star system. Doing, always doing what one should not do because the virtuoso hearing of his ten
fingers allows him to go so far, so high, so strong that the final fall is then liberation in the relieved
silence of a stormy sea finally calmed but which leaves in our boiling brains in our too narrow skulls
a tsunami which submerges us with two or four rebellious hands.
The rebels of this world are always followers of Chopin living with George Sand at 80 rue
Taitbout, even if they end up, our rebels, always like Chopin's little dog spinning on itself like a top,
chasing its tail. which flees as quickly as it whips the air, the wind of the routed eternal drift of some
raft of some Medusa. Do you hear the song of the Lorelei trying to raise you up against the whole
world?
Listen to Goethe and his
Röslein, Röslein, Röslein rot,
Röslein auf der Heiden.
[Little rose, Little rose, Little red rose,
Little rose on the moor.]
It was put to music by Schubert whom we mentioned at the beginning of this hallucinating
vision. Could it be this tourniquet-spinning dance of Chopin's little dog that strangles and kills us
forever like the mad dash of the Erl King who cannot save what death already holds, what death
calls and covets?
7. In seinen Armen das Kind war tot.
[The child in his arms finds he motionless, dead.]
It's strange how I always felt this
morbidity when I was in a meeting in the
apartment of George Sand and Frédéric
Chopin at 80 rue Taitbout. Chapin for me
is the musician of specters and Schubert
is that of just before a specter takes
shape if I dare say. Takes shape in the
forest of Gabriel, the aptly named. So, is
Mélanie Bonis, this ghost who has
returned from so far away, thanks to
Laurent Martin and the Concerts de
Vollore, is she in phase with these
composers, or is she going through a
trance in front of what she could have
done, and what today we can give her
back, make her do, complete the
frustrated dream. Is there a pure feminine
underground dimension in her music
condemned to the salons in her time, and now alive and resurgent in festivals? I think so, but still, it
is necessary to let oneself be carried away by the intuitive and wild female psyche compared to the
male psyche that is so strongly square that it corrects the diabolical tritone which sounds askew,
cantilevered, discordant, satanic in a word.
