I knew them from 1976 to 1995 when I finally migrated to our Central Mountains and Auvergne. They were a tremendous experience. They were able to make music speak and laugh and they moved Carmen, the opera, of course, dumb ass! Picmuche and Poupinou were for me the perfect extraterrestrial neighborly pair if not a couple of clowns. Now that Gilles Defacques is gone, are they still going to wait for the coming of some God? Probably because clowns always stick to their antics. And they have, had, and will always have plenty of tricks in their pockets, and if not in their pockets probably in their shoes, socks, but beware the hats: they always hide some deadly weapons of general laughter there, laughing louse that is ready to jump onto you just like fleas on a famished dog.

INTERNATIONAL DE QUARTIER, LE PRATO – ÉDITIONS
INVENIT – 2023
Monique Boucher convoque l’abattoir.
On arrive à penser

6. ENGLISH VERSION
WHEN THE EPHEMERAL THAT
LASTS ENDLESSLY ENDS UP
CREATIVELY FAMISHED
The ephemeral, sometimes even the evanescent living theater, even dressed as a
circus and parading as a clown, lasts fifty years, that is to say, there must be something
surviving in this effervescence, and that is surprising, to the point of lasting that this elusive
horizon that we call Endgame is ultimately only one more door open to who knows what
desire of the young man who perhaps has a name, for the little boy, that he is going to pilfer
or kidnap from life while waiting for the end of the world. And the ephemeral survives itself
and forever in this Beckettian pirouette, well hidden under the waiting for some god in the
form of a rather brutal shoe or boot with the little boys who serve as his messengers and
this good necessarily Irish god blocks any regeneration or any apocalypse, and let's not talk
about an epiphany.
This living Theater lives only in the momentary movement that has no future except
in the false step that leads only to the death of the instant (x) in the instant (x+1) that is
however only the antechamber of a return of the death of its predecessor in its own mortal
rebirth, I mean rebirth beyond its own death. The mathematics of life – to avoid speaking
like the Buddha who would say that everything being dominated and carried away by the
inexorable permanent transformation of impermanence "anicca", everything therefore
triumphs and only "dukkha" and "anatta" remain – this mathematics of life is nevertheless
7. perhaps simpler, and in cruder terms, we would say that each instant burns with the desire
to kick the ass of the one that came before, meaning that is behind, so that it may go and
die as far away as possible, but as it had to turn around and its preceding moment is already
dead, it creates its own demise in the desire to prevent the eternal flight of time. I would
have to make a funeral oration a la Bossuet from the peremptory pulpit of the Saint-Denis
Basilica. Imagine there, as we would say in the Occitan of Auvergne, Louis XIV well seated
on his chair, perhaps a commode chair, with his hands busy groping the marquise next to
him.
But that's just what I am doing. In my present time (x) I have returned to a time (x-1)
that has already been dead for 28 years for me, and I only find the world from (x-1) to (x)
that I have missed. To return is to betray the former departure and to depart is to betray the
later return. I invented the perpetual movement or simply the schizophrenic anguish which
simmers at the bottom of our dendrites, some might think of our pants or underpants. It is
that between leaving and coming back there is no starting point nor ending point if it is not
to die finally once and for all, but that leaves me with my raging hunger. But dying or
departing on stage or under the big top is my lucky moment when the death of the character
leaves a chance of survival to the actor or clown who will be able to cross the street in a
moment, when the curtain falls, to go and have a royal or bio-vegan hamburger at the
8. MacAdaver open 24/7 for those who are dead but still on probation. When we tell you that
there are only Living Deads from beyond the grave in this world of memory. And Alain
D'Haeyer is hiding and discreet when he pricks your sides with a tetanic needle and when
he comes out of his Flemish forest he is performing his bashing as densely as necessary
with a thick ash wood cudgel, a green one of course, because more ecological than me, you
die. And Poupinou is hardly more than a little small minute Quinquin who has grown too fast,
and its origin from Fasques in Pas de Calais makes Thumesnil angry that one stole its
etymology who however performs on terraces in the best neighborhoods, like Moulins, but
not that in Allier when Poupinou steps out in the sun emerging from his cave.
But if the Green Reaper takes you by the collar like a vulgar cop would do, though
not in the street, but rather on stage, you will have the chance to die for real as a character,
an ageless person who has had neither birth nor death and will never have any. Imagine the
death of Tartuffe who, by the way, laughs at it in a place named Serpent-that-Laughs, near
Coulommiers and its cheese which does not "sweat at all, nor have any fungus," in other
words, it is certainly not prone to coulure, which would be a height for Tartuffe. "Hide me this
dead man that I don't want to smell", and the actor survives for just as long as he is a military
entertainer or an incognito person in the street who is only recognized when he has put on
his foundation. Poupinou may have died a hundred times in his long survival, but Gilles
Defacques has never yet succeeded in really dying, even once, because it takes more than
the goddess Hecate, the hidden face of the lunar Selene, who makes a triplet with Diana or
any other Demeter, to reap our man of the woods. He is eternal I tell you, or at least as
renewable as the moonlight and the northern lights.
But what I will never forget was the appalling confrontation between the creators and
artists on one hand, and two deputies of Pierre Mauroy, the Mayor of Lille and Prime Minister,
when Hector Viron decided to interrupt the performances of a show by Dominique Sarrazin
and the Théâtre de la Découverte, an interruption that was notified after the third
9. performance because the safety commission did not come until after the third performance.
The reason for the closing up of the show given then was safety, the stage and setting had
not been fireproofed. Radio Quinquin got involved and from "Hector Viron, Virons Hector"
(Hector Viron, Let’s get rid of Hector) to the appeal of the Communist Senator, deputy mayor
of Lille, George Marchais was seized and Jacques Milhau was appointed intercessor and
the “Salome” whistleblower who wanted the head of “Jean-Baptiste” Hector Viron for
infringement of the freedom of artistic creation and performance due to notorious
incompetence that made him send the safety commission after three public shows, this
Salome whistleblower represented in this case the National Union of Authors and
Composers. And as never one without two, although we missed the two without three, it was
Monique Boucher's turn to send the bulldozers against the cinema where the Théâtre du
Prato survived in Wazemmes, because of the renovation of the district. Mass action and
demonstration and Radio Quinquin got involved again. "Lille in its one-hundred-year war
against Gilles Defacques and Alain d'Haeyer, bulldozers in the lead, the well-named Jeanne
Hachette Monique Boucher summons the slaughtering brigade. This was too much for the
Prime Minister who came down from Paris and negotiated a solution for Dominique Sarrazin
with Gildas Bourdet and the show could start again at the Salamandre Theater, and the
Théâtre du Prato was installed in an old textile factory in Moulins-Lille, and at the following
municipal election the two deputy mayors guilty of infringing on the freedom of artistic
creation and performance were kindly erased from the list and the Senator left the Senate
Oh, how much I remember from that year 1983.
At the end of a long life, not yet completely finished but three years longer than Gilles
Defacques' - we have both reached or almost reached our life expectancy - this book is a
breath of fresh air in a situation shaken by the madness of some who believe themselves to
be the masters of the world and by the incoherence of others who have reached such a
canonical age that even Methuselah is beginning to get jealous. One comes to think that
one should buy a bazooka and a flame thrower and... "But you're crazy, my poor thing,
you're even worse than those whom you want – not without reason – to remove from the
power positions that they reached only by dancing to populism." Just think, a former secret
agent against a former TV comedian. This is a circus and we would be asking for a second
helping if poor people weren't dying every night. We are governed either by "nihilistic
religious fundamentalism" (page191) or even worse but yet less coherent terroristic secular
fundamentalism, or phallocratic religious fundamentalism for which the motto “Let them live!”
condemns contraception, abortion, and submits everyone to having so many children that
sexual abstinence becomes social ethical self-defense. We should respect only one human
10. rule, "Let them live!" Auvergne’s version, "Let them there live!", and Bordeluche version, "I
told you so, let them live, my poor bastard!" I will not give a version in Picard or Ch'ti. I believe
that Cafougnette by the pen of Jules Mousseron could definitely propose something, but it
would be entirely reserved for a bacchanalian evening at the bottom back room of an
estaminet on a bamboche funfair’s Saturday evening in Denain. White square, please.
Jacques Bonnafé can tell you. But not Ronny Coutteure any more.
