INTRODUCTION
enrichissantes.
Je vous souhaite une bonne lecture.

INTRODUCTION
A (very) personal – and unperfect – vision of the online printing market
I started working with web-to-print systems in 2000, using a platform that combined Printcafé software and Indigo
printing machine, not yet under HP brand. This first experience gave me the feeling that, for the first time in my career,
two worlds that were totally opposed (print and web) were converging in a new dimension. From 2007 to 2009, while
I was driving projects of publishing systems under Quark Xpress Server for major companies, I understood the potential
of online editing of printed marketing supports. In 2010, I’ve led the development of an online printing platform for
French ISP Orange. This gave me a first overview of the tremendous potential of online printing industry. When I joined
Exaprint in 2012, I had the feeling of managing a Formula 1 team : there were such energy and such growth, with so
much market demand… For now 10 years, through my blog, I had the chance to develop a large network of people who
are, like me, passionated by web-to-print. But I’ve always been disappointed by the lack of market study on online
printing industry. Some market insights talk about software or commercial printing in general, but none is specifically
dedicated to our market segment. That’s the reason why I’ve decided to build up my own market study, using data and
tools available on the Internet. I’m happy to share this study with you : it’s for sure uncomplete and by some aspects,
approximative. But I think it will help some of you decide how to position themselves on the market, and I hope it will
generate interesting debate.
I wish you a nice reading.

AVERTISSEMENT
DISCLAIMER
This market study is based on the projection of the geographical breakdown of the audience of online printing websites
to the annual revenue as it is available on the internet. This study was not realized using traditional means as interviews
or financial analysis of every company. As a consequence, many of my estimations are probably wrong, and I invite my
readers to take contact with me if they have more precise information to give me.

solution BuiltWith.
METHODOLOGY
In order to realize this market study, I’ve made a compilation of all available sources from the Internet for companies
selling printed material over the Internet, except for specialists of photo products. When they’re published, I’ve used
financial results of companies, as well as press articles and press releases, and, for companies listed on Stock
Markets, annual reports for investors.
When companies are operating on multiple countries or through various brands, I’ve used the breakdown of their
audience to split their annual revenue. For this, tools like SimilarWeb, Semrush, the Internet Wayback Machine or
Alexa ranking helped me a lot, as well as financial information websites such as societe.com
When datas were missing, I calculated projections using average KPIs based on market standards or from my own
experience.
In parallel, I analyzed which technologies are used by every online printing operator thanks to the BuiltWith online
tool. I’ve compiled all these results and compared them with available literature about online printing.
As a conclusion, I would like to say that on micro-scale, many results should be wrong. But on a larger scale, I’m sure
that this market study reflects the trends of online printing industry.

CHIFFRE D’AFFAIRES
Panier moyen : 104 €

REVENUES
Constant growth for 10 years, driven by major companies… until now.
Without any surprise, the trend of online printing is at the opposite of what happens in traditional printing. While global printing
revenues and weights of printed material has been decreasing for 10 years, this study shows that revenue generated by online
printing as well as its market share is increasing. In other words, eCommerce is taking shares over offline printing, following what’s
happening in other markets with eBusiness.
Revenue of online printing in Europe : 2.5 billion €in 2019
Market share of online printing over global commercial printing in Europe : 10%.
Following a Smithers Pira study, global commercial printing market is estimated at 25.5 billion euros in 2019. In 2012, this market
share was around 5%, in an overall market revenue of 32 billion euros [source]
Growth of market since 2012 : +59%.
In 2012, revenue of online printing was estimated by to around 1.6 billion euros. CAGR is estimated to 7% since 2012, while global
printing market decreased by 20% on the same period.
Number of orders : 24 million estimated
Average basket : 104 €.
In comparison with the AOV in eCommerce (estimated around 61€), average basket in Online printing is higher.
Average Conversion rate : 4%.
As for the AOV, conversion rate is higher in online printing than other market segments in eCommerce. This fact is probably the
consequence of the presence of many operators acting in B2B / B2B2C segment.
Major companies vs. Small companies : 80/20.
Online printing operators that are business units of big international groups I call the “majors” (like Cewe, OnlinePrinters, Cimpress,
Grafenia, United Print and FlyerAlarm) represent 20% of the number of companies, and generate 82% of the total segment
revenue. But this domination seems to decrease a little bit, as constant currency growth of some of these players has been slowing
down for a couple of months in Europe [source]. As a confirmation of this trend, the market share of major companies over the
total revenue of web-to-print decreased from 90% in 2012 to 82% in 2019, according to my own estimations.

Royaume-Uni selon source Statista].
indépendants, on arrive à :

5 YEARS FORECASTS
Growth is slowing down, at a lower rhythm than global eCommerce. But perspectives remain
interesting, especially for independent printers.
According to a Report Linker market study [source], “commercial online printing market in the European Union is expected to
record a CAGR of almost 5% during 2019-2023” period.
What’s first interesting to notice, is this forecast is lower than global eCommerce growth estimated CAGR for the same period
(around 7,7% for Spain, France, Germany and the UK according Statista website). It’s probably an indicator that online printing
reaches a limit in offline to online conversion.
If we project past years trends 1) growth of online printing 2) decrease trend of global commercial printing revenue 3) increase of
independent online printers share) to 2025, we can notice that :
• Annual revenue of online printing would reach 3.4 billion eurosin 2025
• Market share of online printing would reach 24% in the global commercial printing market
• Independent online printer would reach 872 million euros revenue

GEOGRAPHICAL BREAKDOWN
Strong differences between market values and commercial balance sheets in Europe
Top 3 of online printing markets in Europe are without surprise, Deutschland, France and the UK. Italy, Switzerland-Austria and
Benelux are following these 3 countries. Emerging countries are Spain and Eastern Europe. But these figures are hiding extremely
different situations, with countries able to export large part of their productions and others, like France, where the market is
flooded by products manufactured abroad.
I estimate that Deutschland and the Netherlands are currently able to export a large part of goods the print to other markets in Europe
and elsewhere. Balance between sales and production revenue of online operators is quite flat in Italy. At the opposite, the UK, France
and Spain are victims of large imports of printed goods coming from other countries.

PROVIDED SERVICES
Standardized product range, with only a few differentiators
When you compare the pool of services provided by online printers in Europe, you notice that a unique model still dominates the
market : one web storefront where you can find micro-sites or landing pages dedicated to specific segments like resellers or
end-customers through customizable templates. In best of cases, the storefront design is optimized for mobile devices, but in
regard to specific file upload constraints related to online printing, it doesn’t still concern the majority of websites.
Only a few players have developed specific services dedicated to market segments, like native mobile applications, or API
(micro-services) easing interconnection between their catalog and order flows with IT systems of their customers.
In Europe, only :
• 39% of online printers provide a specific resellers program, often limited to rebates on public pricing
• 10% of online printers offer API
• 2% of online printers have developed a native mobile application, for iOS or Android devices.

TECHNOLOGIES

TECHNOLOGIES
PHP and Magento on top of list
When it’s time to develop their eCommerce storefront, most of online printers in Europe choose to create their solution from
scratch, often using PHP; ASP.NET or J2EE frameworks. Some of them are making a different choice, using « ready to use »
eCommerce platform : in that case, Magento is the most chosen system (16%), followed by Prestashop (5%), WooCommerce
(5%) and Contentful (3%). Remaining players are using other technologies available on the market.
It’s interesting to see that no online printers from the Europe Top 100 is using dedicated web-to-print storefronts technologies.
It seems that these technologies are more relevant for newbies, or specific uses like online editing of customizable templates.

concurrentielle reste encore raisonnable.
HUGE CONTRAST BETWEEN COUNTRIES
Some are able to exports, while others are in red ocean configuration
The global situation of online printing in Europe isn’t the exact mirror of what is happening locally in every country. Contrasts
between them are important, with competition levels extremely different. This market study enabled me to make distinction
between 3 categories of countries, depending on sales balance sheet, competition pressure and protective barriers :
• Kings of export : countries where big online printing platforms locate their factories, from where they export printed
commodities across Europe. In these leading countries (Deutschland and Benelux), foreign competitors encounter
difficulties to enter the market because of specific consumer rules or difficult languages ;
• Red Oceans : countries where 1) competition is extremely high between local platforms and foreign operators 2) market
maturity is at its highest level 3) consumer rules and languages ease introduction of new foreign competitors. The UK
and France are typical examples of these « red ocean » countries. Italy is becoming one of them, even if market maturity
is not yet at its highest level
• Emerging zones : countries where online printing market is growing, but still lacking consumer maturity. In other words,
countries where the transition between offline printing to online is at its beginning. Spain, Portugal and Eastern countries
are good examples.

Online printing :
a dynamic market with constant changes
2019 will be reminded as a transition year for online printing : traditional web-to-print models of major companies
like Cewe or Cimpress are suffering a slow down as their margins are decreasing due to price war and increasing
marketing costs ; marketplaces are entering our market, thanks to new AI-powered comparison technologies, in B2B
as well as B2C, with Amazon ; a new generation of startupers, coming from spin-off companies of the majors, is
rising… and raising millions of euros across Europe ; and API-based cloud printing solutions are silently emerging on
the market. What was true in 2015 is not valable any more today. 5 years ago, with mergers and acquisitions
everywhere, it looked difficult for a small independent printer to go online. Today, it’s different : eBusiness is an
opportunity, as customers changed. They’ve understood that many online printers are “fabless”. So, they’re looking
today for a digital user experience with local service, close to them. Short circuit online printing is a new hybrid model
SMEs of print should embrace, in order to provide their customers with best of worlds : user experience of best
eCommerce websites, and the service, expertise, proximity and sustainability of local printers. Because sustainability
is not only a question of recycled papers… it’s also about the distance between your office and the printing
production facility.
In 4 or 5 years, I believe the landscape in online printing would have changed : major companies will be bigger, but not
as many as today, because Amazon have entered the game. And I also believe that hundreds of small hybrid printers
will have raised… providing a new shopping experience.

REMERCIEMENTS
SPECIAL THANKS
First of all, I’ld like to thank the person that gave me the idea of this market study : Joanny Rigollot, from Saxoprint. We started a
conversation a few months ago about my evaluation of the French online printing market, and his opinion was that I went wrong.
This message gave me the idea to study in depth our market, to calculate as precisely as possible the generated revenue from
information available on the internet.
I’ld like to thank also my teams from Adesa-Smartlabel for what we do every day in web-to-print, my former colleagues from
Exaprint, for the 5 years I spent with them. Thanks to Guillaume Prudent from the Caractère magazine, Cécile Jarry from 656
Editions, and Yves d’Aviau de Ternay for all his contributions.
Thanks to the online printer community, you’re writing this new page of the history of print. And thanks to my wife Sabine, and my
two kids, for their patience…
