To speak of Mo Xiang Tong Xiu’s novel, or rather series of novels, Heaven Official’s Blessing is difficult but fascinating. How can we deal with two young men sleeping together and yet having no carnal contact, which does not mean no hormonal or seminal activity, but definitely not shared? Why is the gay interpretation so easily cast onto this novel so fast and heavily in the West? So far, no answer. Boys’ bands did not last very long in Europe, and we can wonder if they ever existed in North America, and we can also wonder if these boys’ bands were not an English specialty. But in Asia they are a very old and traditional practice. The South Koreans are the masters as for boys’ bands right now, and they last a tremendous number of years, even when they are no longer boys. We are used to these boys sculpted by exercise as if they were Greek statues and they never missed a chance to let the audience, let us see their abdominals or their nude body over the waistline of their underwear, trousers even partly open. No one, in Korea or any-else-where would say they are gay. Because they are not. For them, the eroticism on the stage that can only be shared by boys since there are only boys on the stage, is just that: titillating play on the stage directed at the audience, boys as well as girls. They might be shocked if you told them they are gay, because they are not, because it is not even the point. Erotic titillation is not sexual, only onanism for the spectators. The Chinese are following behind, but they seem to be willing to bring boys and girls together in those young people’s bands. Will they succeed? That will have to be shown in ten years. They develop a relationship that is both intimate and spiritual, and yet their association is first of all the bringing together of their particular powers – that are great on both sides – to solve some cosmic and human problems in the human realm that is constantly invaded by supernatural beings who only want to exploit these not so swift humans: make them worship the supernatural beings, pay tribute (meaning actually give these spiritual beings what they need to survive and thrive in the human world, like temples and food, and eventually some more carnal pleasures. Is this author, a woman mind you, playing with our penile equipment, or only with our sentimental and emotional need to be in love and cooperate with people who look as young as us and are of the same sex as us. Can these boys’ emotions develop into real love including carnal satisfaction. So far, in the first volume, it does not. We’ll see later.

You should know first of all that the author is a woman, but I guess you do know this.
You may read the book without taking this into account, but you would be surprised by
some very unexpected elements. There are not many female characters and some of
them are real monsters of authority, frustration, and compensation. And yet there is no
sexism in this treatment. In fact, the female characters who are viciously aggressive are
also victims or have been victims for a long time, and for them, it is only an eye for an eye.
The fact that one of these female characters is the mistress, or master if you prefer, of very
vicious and lethal snakes is typically compensation for a life of sexist frustration or even
bullying. The snakes become penile compensations.
You might also be surprised by the particular relationship the two officially male
characters Xie Lian and San Lang / Hua Cheng entertain. All the more surprised because
they are described as being real beauties, and by beauty, I mean they have extremely fine
quasi-feminine features without being women. The relationship is very intimate but not in
any way described as physical. San Lang does not even want to be touched and the hand
contact at the very end of this volume is so prudish that it is like going against some taboo.
Fans are considering, especially in the West I guess because in the West they
consider such a male-to-male relationship as having to be separate, treated differently,
and as some exclusive binary rapport between homo- and hetero-sexual relationships,
considering I was saying this intimacy as being at least homo-erotic (think of Walt
Whitman). The two men are considered by some readers as being gay, but without being
gay skin to skin, body to body, just the reverse of an eye for an eye vengeful desire. This
homo-anything obsession in the West sounds more like the projection of the frustrated
desire of some readers instead of a real fact, or for women readers a sort of surrogate
vision of what they would like two men to do in front of their eyes, but they dare not
imagine in real and full intercourse activities. At the same time, we learn that Xie Lian has
ascended three times to heaven in his 400-year-long life and is as such, a quasi-god. On
the other hand, Hua Cheng is a ghost of the top category, meaning he can wrap himself in
any human skin of his choice and his powers are such that his skin then will feel quite fully
human. But it is only a surface, and the next time they meet, he will try to appear in his real
being.
I think it is a lot more interesting to consider their relationship as being the relationship
between two people who are on the divinity side or the ghost side of real life. Then the
author is not exploring their sexual personality nor even their gender orientation (I did not
say sexual because it is just irrelevant from the story I am reading) because they are NOT
human. We have a complex exploration of a similarly complex relationship. They have a
mission to fulfill together, joining their powers and their abilities. To do this, they have to
bring together as empathetically as possible their two personalities, which brings them so

3. close that they become intimate, but they never lose the objective of this intimacy: to
multiply their respective individual powers to defeat the real monsters and liberate the
characters that have been imprisoned by these monsters. And they find out that A + B is
by far larger than A or B.
I was told one day that for sailors in a warship on a long voyage without any stop, all
the sailors are mostly men nowadays with more and more women, but on the sea, you
only have sailors, female or male, who love one another because that love is the power of
the crew, and the power of the ship. That has nothing to do with sex and unwanted sexual
contact is rape and nothing else. We have that kind of atmosphere here in this book. We
feel they are going to hug themselves, particularly in the last chapter and we wonder if it is
going to be “hug themselves” or “hug each other” and yet it is none, and in the morning,
Hua Cheng is gone though he left a present to Xie Lian, a ring on a silver chain. We know
this ring on this silver chain is packed with power and will be important in the next volume.
Such a book cannot be summarized. We have a picaresque journey very similar to the
Journey West of a monk who is as beautiful as a virginal girl but is a just-as-much virginal
boy, the famous Monkey, and two more male characters going west to recuperate the
sacred documents of Buddhism and bring them back to the Emperor. The universe has
three levels, at least. The real world, the ghost world, and the heavenly world. There is a
fourth level which is that of evil spirits and other monsters that invade the mortal world all
the time because humans are their fodder, grub, or daily bread. The main charm of the
book is in the style and the tone of the story. It is fascinating, and disquieting at times but
always serene, and if you remain serene in your mind, like any Buddhist should do, you
will go through all dangers and solve all problems. The constant presence of dangers and
dangerous beings makes the story page-turning but the serenity you have to maintain
makes it pure pleasure. The proper word should be serendipity: to remain serene and
open to everything that may happen may lead you to find yourself face to face, nose to
nose with something valuable and absolutely unexpected, another positive version of the
an-eye-to-an-eye fantasy, though it may at times be less positive and frankly negative like
meeting with the lethal snakes we have already mentioned. And yet, they are a gate or a
cenote to a higher level of enlightenment, a deeper level of life experience, life-in-death or
death-in-life, a living death to be the symmetrical entity of a dying life.
So, forget about what some readers may say and just enjoy the extraordinary creativity
of this author, with, so far, no repeats as it so often happens in action films, books, or
stories produced or inspired by Hollywood for whom a remake is at times more important
than the original though it is often a pale copy of the original.

5. VERSION FRANÇAISE
Il faut savoir avant tout que l’auteure est une femme, mais je suppose que vous le
savez. Vous lirez peut-être le livre sans en tenir compte, mais vous serez surpris par des
éléments très inattendus. Il n'y a pas beaucoup de personnages féminins et certaines
d'entre elles sont de véritables monstres d'autorité, de frustration et de compensation. Et
pourtant, il n’y a aucun sexisme dans ce traitement. En fait, les personnages féminins
vicieusement agressifs sont aussi des victimes ou l’ont été depuis longtemps, et pour
elles, ce n'est qu’œil pour œil, dent pour dent. Le fait que l'un de ces personnages
féminins soit la maîtresse, ou le maître si vous préférez, de serpents très vicieux et
mortels est typiquement une compensation pour une vie de frustration sexiste, voire
d'intimidation. Les serpents deviennent des compensations péniennes.
Vous pourriez également être surpris par la relation particulière qu'entretiennent les
deux personnages officiellement masculins Xie Lian et San Lang / Hua Cheng. D'autant
plus surpris qu'ils sont décrits comme étant de vraies beautés, et par beauté, j'entends
qu'elles ont des traits quasi féminins extrêmement fins sans pour autant être des femmes.
La relation est très intime mais en aucun cas qualifiée de physique. San Lang ne veut
même pas qu'on le touche et le contact de la main à la toute fin de ce volume est si prude
qu'il semble aller à l'encontre d'un tabou.
Les fans y pensent sans cesse, surtout en Occident, je suppose, parce qu'en
Occident, ils considèrent une telle relation entre hommes comme devant être séparée,
traitée différemment et avec un rapport binaire exclusif entre les relations homosexuelles
et hétérosexuelles, et comme je disais juste à l’instant pour les Occidentaux cette intimité
est au moins homo-érotique (pensez à Walt Whitman). Les deux hommes sont considérés
par certains lecteurs comme étant homosexuels, tout en n’étant pas homosexuels peau
sur peau, corps sur corps, juste à l'opposé d'un désir de vengeance œil pour œil, dent
pour dent. Cette obsession de l'homo-n'importe-quoi en Occident ressemble plus à la
projection du désir frustré de certains lecteurs qu'à un fait réel, ou pour les lectrices à une
sorte de vision de substitution de ce qu'elles aimeraient que deux hommes fassent sous
leurs yeux, mais elles n'osent pas imaginer des activités sexuelles réelles et complètes, ne
serait-ce que pour éviter la censure. Dans le même temps, nous apprenons que Xie Lian
est monté trois fois au ciel au cours de sa vie de 400 ans et est en tant que tel, un quasi-
dieu. D'un autre côté, Hua Cheng est un fantôme de la catégorie supérieure suprême, ce
qui signifie qu'il peut s'envelopper dans n'importe quelle peau humaine de son choix et ses
pouvoirs sont tels que sa peau sera ressentie et se sentira elle-même alors tout à fait
pleinement humaine. Mais ce n’est qu’une surface, et lors de leur prochaine rencontre, il
tentera d’apparaître dans son être réel.
Je pense qu'il est beaucoup plus intéressant de considérer leur relation comme étant
la relation entre deux personnes qui sont du côté divin ou du côté fantôme de la vraie vie.
Ensuite, l'auteur n'explore pas leur personnalité sexuelle ni même leur orientation de

6. genre (je n'ai pas dit sexuelle parce que cela n'a tout simplement pas de rapport avec
l'histoire que je lis) parce qu'ils ne sont PAS humains. Nous avons une exploration
complexe d’une relation tout aussi complexe. Ils ont une mission à remplir ensemble, en
unissant leurs pouvoirs et leurs capacités. Pour ce faire, ils doivent rapprocher le plus
empathiquement possible leurs deux personnalités, ce qui les rapproche tellement qu'ils
en deviennent intimes, mais ils ne perdent jamais l'objectif de cette intimité : multiplier
leurs pouvoirs individuels respectifs pour vaincre les véritables monstres et libérer les
personnages qui ont été emprisonnés par ces monstres. Et ils découvrent que A + B est
de loin plus grand que A ou B.
On m'a dit un jour que pour les marins d'un navire de guerre qui font un long voyage
sans escale – tous les marins sont aujourd'hui majoritairement des hommes avec de plus
en plus de femmes – mais sur la mer, il n'y a que des marins, femmes ou hommes, qui
s'aiment. parce que cet amour est la puissance de l’équipage et la puissance du navire.
Cela n’a rien à voir avec le sexe et un contact sexuel non désiré est un viol et rien d’autre.
Nous avons ce genre d’atmosphère ici dans ce livre. On sent qu'ils vont se serrer dans
leurs bras, particulièrement dans le dernier chapitre et on se demande si ça va être "se
serrer chacun dans ses bras" ou "se serrer ensemble dans leurs bras" et pourtant ce n'est
pas le cas, et au matin, Hua Cheng est parti bien qu'il ait laissé un cadeau à Xie Lian, une
bague sur une chaîne en argent. Nous savons que cette bague sur cette chaîne en argent
est pleine de pouvoir et sera importante dans le prochain volume.
Un tel livre ne peut pas être résumé. Nous avons un voyage picaresque très similaire
au Voyage vers l'Ouest d'un moine bouddhiste aussi beau qu'une fille virginale mais qui
est tout autant virginal dans le garçon qu’il est, puis le célèbre Singe, et deux autres
personnages masculins allant vers l'Ouest pour récupérer les documents sacrés du
Bouddhisme et les ramener à l'Empereur. L’univers a au moins trois niveaux. Le monde
réel, le monde fantôme et le monde céleste. Il existe un quatrième niveau qui est celui des
mauvais esprits et autres monstres qui envahissent tout le temps le monde des mortels
parce que les humains sont leur fourrage, leur nourriture ou leur pain quotidien. Le
principal charme du livre réside dans le style et le ton de l’histoire. Elle est fascinante,
parfois inquiétante, mais toujours sereine, et si vous restez serein dans votre esprit,
comme tout bouddhiste se doit de le faire, vous traverserez tous les dangers et résoudrez
tous les problèmes. La présence constante de dangers et d'êtres dangereux fait tourner
les pages de l'histoire à grande vitesse mais la sérénité qu'il faut maintenir en fait un pur
plaisir. Le bon mot devrait être heureux et serein hasard : rester serein et ouvert à tout ce
qui peut arriver, cela peut vous amener à vous retrouver face à face, nez à nez avec
quelque chose de précieux et d'absolument inattendu, une autre version positive de la
hantise œil pour œil, dent pour dent, un fantasme visuel, même s'il peut parfois être moins
positif et franchement négatif, comme la rencontre avec les serpents mortels que nous
avons déjà mentionnés. Et pourtant, ils sont une porte ou une doline vers un niveau
supérieur d’illumination, un niveau plus profond d’expérience de vie, une profondeur
supérieure, une vie dans la mort ou une mort dans la vie, une mort vivante qui est l’entité
symétrique d’une vie mourante.
Alors n’écoutez pas pas ce que peuvent dire certains lecteurs ou lectrices et profitez
simplement de l'extraordinaire créativité de cet auteur, sans pour l'instant aucune
répétitivité comme cela arrive si souvent dans les films d'action, les livres ou les histoires
produites ou inspirées par Hollywood pour qui un remake est parfois plus important que
l'original bien qu'il ne s'agisse souvent que d'une pâle copie de l'original.
