Mechanism design theory is concerned with designing systems or mechanisms that meet social goals. It differs from game theory in that the designer chooses the rules of the game rather than inheriting them. A key insight is that mechanisms should incentivize self-interested agents to reveal private information that allows for optimal decisions. For example, a mechanism where one child divides a cake and the other chooses their piece resolves disputes over fair division. Mechanism design aims to align public and private goals by making it in participants' self-interest to achieve the desired social outcome.
This document discusses the theories of management professor Douglas McGregor on employee motivation. Theory X assumes that the average employee dislikes work and must be closely controlled and directed. Theory Y proposes that employees can be self-motivated if given responsibility and rewards that satisfy higher needs like self-fulfillment. The document outlines the key assumptions of each theory, such as Theory X believing people avoid responsibility while Theory Y believes people will seek it under the right conditions.

The Scanlon Plan is an example of Theory Y in practice, with cost-sharing and participation mechanisms to encourage employee involvement and commitment. An effective organization balances concerns for both relationships and production through trust-based accountability and a commitment to people as well as tasks.

This document discusses stakeholders in organizations and their relationships with managers. It defines stakeholders as anyone with an interest in an organization, separating them into inside stakeholders like managers and employees, and outside stakeholders like customers, suppliers, and the government. It describes how managers must balance competing stakeholder goals and allocate resources to satisfy their various interests. The CEO plays a key role in setting goals and strategy to influence organizational effectiveness for stakeholders. Agency theory is also introduced to explain conflicts that can arise between shareholders and top managers.

Organization culture reflects shared values, assumptions, and norms that unite employees. It affects how employees feel and act. Cultures must evolve to survive changing conditions like economic crises, laws, technology. Culture changes when organizations solve problems. Culture can facilitate or inhibit change, which is needed when culture hinders goals. Environmental and internal forces stimulate change. Top leaders set the tone for culture and change by involving stakeholders, building on shared values, and teaching new members. Change targets include individuals, groups, the organization, and the environment.
Closing Keynote Voxxed Days Singapore - Going OpenAlexis Monville
Going open to support your digital transformation
Do you feel your organization, your team, and yourself are focusing on the right things or are you overwhelmed by the thousands of tasks that you need to do? What do you need to get your organization, your team, and yourself to continuously improve to get to the point of doing the things right?
Going open is the best way to support your organization’s digital transformation. Going open is applying the principles of the open organization. Open is the antidote of the lack of focus and the lack of continuous learnings that is ailing organizations today.
What are the differences between a centralized organization and an open organization? Learning about these differences can help you advance your objectives in your digital transformation.
The open source development model is the root of the Open Organization. The diversity the open source model brings is an endless source of inspiration to transform your organization--and this is what this session will expose.
The document discusses how to change your team from the inside by focusing on shared values and principles. It recommends establishing transparency by making work visible, promoting inclusivity, encouraging adaptability through reviews and retrospectives, strengthening collaboration via team agreements, and building community. Leading through these values helps create the conditions for self-organization. Various techniques are presented for applying each value, such as using a matrix to evaluate principles and a team mood graph.
The document discusses strategies for contributing to the success of OpenStack. It advocates for more focused agile teams that have end-to-end ownership within OpenStack projects. This includes having teams focus on delivery, increasing collaboration both within and across corporate and community teams, and providing clarity around workflows and responsibilities to reduce interruptions. The overall goals are to increase focus, delivery, collaboration and impact through refined team structures and processes.

What science knows about happiness - OpenStack Summit - Austin April 2016Alexis Monville
WHAT SCIENCE KNOWS ABOUT HAPPINESS THAT COULD TRANSFORM OPENSTACK is a talk by Alexis Monville given on April 26, 2016 at the OpenStack Summit in Austin.
The document discusses becoming an agile organization and focuses on employee happiness. It notes that happiness is influenced 50% by our set point, 10% by circumstances, and 40% by intentional activities. Happiness is important because it leads to greater health, productivity, and social support. The document suggests cultivating happiness through collaboration, meditation, and pursuing objectives and key results (OKRs).

Openstack Summit - Vancouver - DON’T CHANGE MY MINDSET, I AM NOT THAT OPENAlexis Monville
Talk given with Nick Barcet during the 2015 Vancouver Openstack Summit.
If you are reading this abstract, you probably agree that Cloud technologies in general, and Openstack in particular, are a wonderful enabler of businesses transformation.
At the same time you may have crossed the way of people who seemed stuck in an old way of thinking the use of technologies. They will tell you that what you propose will not work in real life… Probably because, it’s too far away from where they stand right now.
The culture and organization change is often underestimated and touches all the areas from business to ops. Before your organization will be able to consider infrastructure as code, cross-functional teams that are in charge from design to production or zero-touch continuous deployment, there are steps to climb one at a time.
In this session, we will share what we learned from real cases openstack projects:
How to stage your transformation?
How to present information depending on who you are talking to?
How to generate quick wins to keep the enthusiasm momentum?
This document discusses happiness and what leads to happiness. It defines happiness as the meaning and purpose of life according to Aristotle. Happiness comes from intentional activities (40%), circumstances (10%), and a set point (50%). The document encourages cultivating happiness through gratitude, optimism, kindness, forgiveness, flow, and nurturing social relationships. It concludes by thanking the audience and providing additional resources on the science of happiness.
Description :
This document discusses developing products with distributed teams using open source software. It summarizes OpenStack, an open source cloud computing platform, and its development process. OpenStack uses an agile development approach with 6-month release cycles consisting of planning, implementation, pre-release, and release phases. Developers from over 850 companies and 136 countries contribute code through mailing lists, IRC, and other tools. Regular design summits bring together users and developers. The goal is to create conditions for collaboration through communication, feedback, and respect.

How do you agile your global team to contribute to openstackAlexis Monville
This document discusses how the company eNovance uses agile practices to manage their global team working on OpenStack. Key points include:
- Using Scrum values and framework to manage distributed teams across multiple time zones. Communication tools include instant messaging, video conferencing, wikis.
- Onboarding for remote workers includes assigning a buddy, self-training programs, and 2-4 weeks in an office. An Agile Guild shares skills across teams.
- Contributions to OpenStack must be merged upstream before deployment. Real open source involvement is emphasized.
- Agile practices like 2-week sprints and limiting work in progress are applied to both internal development and customer projects involving discovery workshops and iterative design
