Holly Gibney is on the cover by name but not by face. Since she is in the continuation of Bill Hodges and Finders Keepers, she should be white. But she comes after the Holly Gibney of The Outsider adapted for television, and here she is a Black woman with a very expansive hairdo, with dozens of long braids. But don‘t worry. In this book, Holly Gibney encounters none of the problems a Black woman would encounter as an investigator having to deal with white people without a gun, a uniform, and a badge. The way she gets the confidence of white people, including in this case the serial killers, at least one, does not show any racial bias on their side. And from the second serial killer, she only gets reluctance to speak and even cold hostility and distance keeping. Concerning Barbara Robinson who is a Black woman, this second serial killer, Emily Harris serves her a cup of tea of the worst possible type she can devise. That’s what I think is the main shortcoming of this book: the lack of graphic descriptions of what these serial killers do to their victims, how they cut them up, probably alive for a while, and concerning the consciousness of the racial bias Black people are the victims of, it is only rather generic and more a social trait of the US society than frustration and resentment on the side, I mean the inner and mental side, of the Black characters, Jerome and Barbara, and a few others like Ellen Craslow, and since we are in the George Floyd period, I am surprised that there is no allusion to him, and only an allusion to a fictitious local and unknown Black victim in a similar situation and yet not very graphic about it.

STEPHEN KING – HOLLY –
2023
This is the direct sequel of the famous Bill Hodges Trilogy that counts three novels,
1. Mr. Mercedes (2014), 2. Finders Keepers (2015), 3. End of Watch (2016). But we all
know Bill Hodges is dead and that he had willed the business, Finders Keepers, to his
“secretary become partner” Holly Gibney, but seven years have not elapsed in the story. In
fact, hardly one year probably if we see what Jerome and Barbara Robinson have become
in “seven” years. But some time has gone by, nevertheless. But I suggest concentrating
our attention on the plot of this “detective” monstrous story.
First of all, we have to say that Stephen King tells us from the very start who the
criminals are because he is trying to explore the psyche of these two criminals who are so
different from what we would expect from a couple of post-80-year-old university
professors, one in biology and nutritional science, the other one, his wife, in literature,
meaning apparently only English literature. To state that beyond 80 years of age you
cannot be a serial killer is totally absurd. There is no age for serial killers, and no age limit
or mandatory retirement age for serial killers. The physical weakness is often easy to
compensate with intelligence, planning, and “culture,” I mean the cultivation of the
knowledge and the science of crime. It is true banks do not lend money to people beyond
80, at least in France they don’t, except if the old people have someone behind them who
is going to guarantee the loan, plus good insurance in case of early death. But 80 is no
longer the hell some people have thought and still think it is. But that hell is quite in phase
with what society thinks, and in this book, Stephen King is trying by all means to describe
society the way it is, and I must say our society is not what it could be. Either it has gone
back to infantile psychology and behavior. Or it has become senile before all logical time.
Look at a terrorist organization attacking in the middle of the night a rave party of many
hundred people in the middle of a desert and killing them all except one hundred or so
they take prisoners and hostages. Senile thinking in an infantile whimsical mind. True
enough the hybridization of the two is pretty dangerous.
But think of another country where a government is moving to the decision of banning
the minority language of one-third of the population, but a language that is extremely
dominant in one-third or one-fourth of the country, and essentially in industry. A war to
impose this decision would never be won without the funds from other countries who
remain very nicely and prudently out of the conflict itself. The civil or terrorist war of the
Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka lasted 30 years but it was defeated in the end, and they are now
learning on both sides of the linguistic divide how to live with the other side, how to speak
the language of the other side. Think of apartheid in South Africa. The Afrikaans
leadership had to be mentally senile to think they would impose their racist domination
forever.
But Stephen King tries to show the world the way it is so that Jerome knows he has to
absolutely respect the speed limit when driving on any road in the USA because to be
stopped for speeding by some uniformed puppet will end with one black driver dead.
Stephen King has digested the George Floyd episode, and many others, though he never
quotes him by name. We will assume that the normal society described here is sane, but
that in this sane society, some people are, and it is clearly said or implied, insane, or made
insane by falling into some addictive activity or occupation, like alcohol, drugs, tobacco

with or without some relaxing stuffing, opioids, fentanyl, etc. Then some insane people
believe something so much fracking – to use Holly Gibney’s word – disturbing that they are
ready to kill, even at times their own families, to satisfy their absolute beliefs with
conviction (two meanings intended) and faithfulness (two meanings intended too).
Now it’s time to get down to the details of this horror story told in the fluent and
moderate tone of a story for teenagers, but is it a story for teenagers? But there is
absolutely no supernatural element, no monsters in the closets, no extra-realistic divine
interventions at all. And you might not be able to go through without getting sick a couple
of times because of the human, absolutely human, nothing but human individual members
of the social and intellectual elite of this society of ours. Imagine the same insanity if it
entered the neurons of politicians. And it has in this world definitely reached the psyche
and the mind of some religious leaders who have become, and in some cases, with no
possible return, sectarian fundamentalists or even terrorists. That common insanity has
often been referred to by Stephen King, like with the bashing of a gay man at the
beginning of the novel It. Only words that are not supposed to be used in some decent
review come to mind, your mind, a mind that at once rotates one or two consonants and
disguises these words in some clownish garb, not for ritzy clothing but for plain social
garbage – Oscar Wilde and his earnest “call a spade a spade” – like for instance fracking,
daunting, bull dip, bonnocks (this one is more British and comes from The Sex Pistols, but
never mind them), mass-pole, and so many others, and they all mean something else of
course and this time you have to be mentally alert and observant, and it is time to just say
“Read my lips,” as George H.W. Bush would say, “No new taxes,” and taxes stand for
“forcibly take advantage of the private family jewels of someone without his or her
consent,” and this understanding will tax your morality heavily.
But what is the crime of these two, a married couple, university professors that is so
appalling – of course not appealing, at least I hope not – in this situation? The two
university professors, retired but not marginalized into non-existence, are abducting one
person every three years (mostly, at least that’s the plan), man, woman, and even one
boy, to put them in a steel cage, to activate their livers with a big chunk of still fresh,
meaning uncooked, enormous piece of veal liver to re-activate the liver of the victims
under the blackmailing pressure of providing the victim with nothing to drink at all, as long
as the raw liver has not been eaten, which is vain, though effective with one exception,
since anyway they are dead, in fact just delayed for the veal liver to be digested and
become effective. Then these two cannibals turn the body into all sorts of products that are
supposed to improve their intellectual performance, ease the pains in their joints or their
backs, and many other ailments of aging people. They manage to lengthen their survival
with the by-products of the killing and processing of the abductees. Stephen King does not
specify if they are still alive when they start extracting the various parts of the body they
will process and consume in one way (by rubbing their joints) or another (ingesting them
after chewing on them), but we can imagine that is the case to keep the benefits of the
abductees’ re-activated livers as long as possible. No problem anyway since their
underground basement is absolutely sound-proof. Only once, does a policewoman speak
of the room where the processing takes place as a “torture chamber.” I hope that will
definitely cut your appetite and you will definitely not start gnawing at and chewing on the
flesh of your life partner. Remember “a pound of flesh” (The Merchant of Venice, a clearly
antisemite remark coming from a Jew who is requiring a non-Jew to keep his promise to
give him one pound of his own flesh if he, the non-Jew, can’t repay the debt he contracted
from the Jew), “a pound of flesh,” we were saying, a day keeps the doctor away. But we
must keep in mind that cannibalism is not at all necessarily eating the flesh. The prisoners
in the German concentration camps – and mind you, they were not all Jews, far from it –

when they died were either burned in some crematorium, and that was a great waste, or
they were processed: hair and hairs recuperated, all fat (better do that as soon as possible
after arrival because the diet in the camp was a real starvation diet) turned into soap, and
all sorts of other products were produced to satisfy the needs of the good Aryans in Berlin
and other places, even Paris actually, not to speak of the clothing, the gold (particularly
golden crowns on teeth that were pulled out in due time after the disembarking from the
cattle trains), and the jewels.
Follow the cannibals by the smell and the moaning caused by various pains in their
bodies. But do not tell me it does not “exist.” Stephen King speaks of a mother putting her
baby in the microwave oven because he or she is constantly crying. And some other
parents may put a child in the washing machine and tumble him or her alive… till death
shuts him or her up. And do not count all the children who disappear in strange conditions
and are never found. The list, and the number, is endless.
We must also quote the segregation against the Blacks in the US society. I would say
this case can be generalized to the whole West: Every country in Europe for example has
its specific categories of population that are segregated in one way or another. The reason
is always that these people do not make the effort – or just plainly cannot, behaviorally,
racially, culturally, or religiously – conform to the norms any society considers normal and
imposes on everyone who is not confirmed as in conformity with this conformity bias,
because it is a bias, and it leads to segregation, at times violent reactions (from the police
or other uniformed conformity-keepers) and then violence (on both sides) and death
become common if not normal and even accepted as justified as the result of a
conformable requirement. But there is more.
Though this question has little to do with the cannibalism of the two professors,
COVID-19 is central because the serial killing all happens right in the center of the worst
period of the pandemic or so. The questions of wearing a mask or not, wearing gloves or
not, not shaking hands but greeting people elbow against elbow, and essentially getting
vaccinated are constantly recalled to our mind. Holly’s mother decided not to be
vaccinated because she followed what her president, Trump, said: it is nothing but a case
of flu, bad flu if you want. Holly’s mother dies in hospital and Holly discovers that her own
mother and her uncle, her mother’s brother, have made her believe that all the savings of
the mother, the uncle, and Holly herself had been dilapidated, in fact, stolen, by some
investor. It all was a farce, and she ended up with a very important heritage. She is a new
millionaire, and she can go into a bar and tell her silly joke about “nuts.” The repetitiveness
of the mention of the COVID-19 pandemic, the absurdity of Trump, and the lack of
judgment of those who follow the President is, for me, slightly too much.
The fact that Jerome and Barbara Robinson both become published authors in the
very same period, Jerome with the story of his great-grandfather in the 1930s who was
then a sort of black gangster, and Barbara with her poetry that centers on the fear, anxiety,
and frustration of herself, a black woman lost in a white society that considers segregation
is a necessary must, and confronted to some white people who are plain criminals and
dream of chasing or even hunting, a black man, or woman, in the street, and shoot him or
her, dead of course. Never do a racist assassination halfway. The victim has to die, slowly
if possible. In fact, this segregation is rather shown as surviving among some people, like,
for example, the literature professor, Emily Harris, for whom rejecting people who are
different from you is plain survival, and she would think “the survival of the fittest” even
though the real quotation is “the survival of the fitter.” In her diary, discovered during the

investigation she wrote, in capital letters for emphasis, about her first victim, Jorge Castro,
a writer in residence at the local college in the same department as Emily Harris:
“[1] I HATE THAT SPIC [2] I HATE THAT FUCKING SPIC [3] I HATE THAT FAGGOT
SPIC [4] I HATE THAT BUTT-PUNCHING FAGGOT SPIC… and so on.”
She must be a fan of Lego sentences built by adding one Lego piece to those already
assembled. In other words, she is not a literary person, but she is like the white author who
is supposed to spend the winter in a hotel in the Rocky Mountains to make sure everything
is all right and dandy. This other character of Stephen King in The Shining, instead of
typing the novel he is supposed to write, only types a repetitive sentence on hundreds of
pages: ALL WORK AND NO PLAY. That’s when we really find “The nuts are
complimentary.” That is when, too, we find out that Stephen King is a vast jungle and to
appreciate his literature we have to be able to remember the elements that are echoing
from one novel to any other, and not necessarily the next. In this case, Jack Torrance and
Emily Harris are both concentrated nuts getting psychotic and neurotic and paranoid about
their own nutty nature. They are probably deranged before starting their criminal career but
if they were not, they become all the “-otic” and “-noid” you can imagine after they started
their serial killing addiction. But, by the way, the killing assertion that all this is nothing, but
a placebo effect is probably excessive because aging is a psychosomatic “activity”
experienced as a doomed curse by many, and taking anything that your psyche believes is
a cure to your ailing aging and all its ailments, is quite enough for the somatic side of it to
accept it and the pain disappears. Why? How? How long? Who knows, and who cares? If
some aspirin cures the pain of metastasized cancer, even for one hour, it is true enough,
though it does not cure the cancer.
The concluding remark will be on the style. It is quite agile and captivating, but I think it
has less speed in it and less poignancy than usual. And it would have been good if the
horror of the torturing and the processing had been more graphic and if the impotence of
both Emily and Rodney Harris had been revealed to both of them, despite what they may
have thought that some sherbet containing the testicles and prostate of the male victims
and the vagina of the female victims could have given them their sexual desires, impulses,
and drives back. In fact, it may have changed the course of the story, and it could have
explained a lapse of a couple of years in the regular pattern of their serial killing, for
instance after Jorge Castro’s processing. That could have also deepened the reflection on
Jorge Castro’s homosexuality: isn’t it carried in the genes, the testicles, and the prostate?
Doesn’t it then make the concoction invalid for Rodney Harris who is obviously “normal,”
hence heterosexual in their definition of a normal sex-life? Or even worse, wouldn’t this
concoction be contagious and thus turn Rodney into a gay man without him knowing it and
definitely without him wanting to?
Nevertheless, this novel is fascinating, and you can note I did not ask any personal
questions about the author and his age or aging. It is not Stephen King who is at stake in
this story, but Emily Harris, Rodney Harris, and Holly Gibney who are. Anyway, aging is,
like COVID-19 or the flu, a pandemic that in the end kills everyone because there is no
vaccine against aging. But I don’t think 80 is the proper turning point, though when we see
both Biden and Trump, we may think it is a turning point and has to be a turning point… for
politicians. Enjoy the novel.

savons tous que Bill Hodges est mort et qu'il avait légué l'entreprise Finders Keepers à sa

l'histoire. En fait, à peine un an sans doute si l'on voit ce que sont devenus Jérôme et
Barbara Robinson en « sept » ans. Mais du temps a quand même passé. Mais je propose
de concentrer notre attention sur l’intrigue de cette monstrueuse histoire « policière ».
Tout d'abord, il faut dire que Stephen King nous dit dès le début qui sont les criminels
parce qu'il essaie d'explorer le psychisme de ces deux criminels qui sont si différents de
ce que l'on pourrait attendre d'un couple d’octogénaires, professeurs d'université, l'un en
biologie et sciences de la nutrition, l'autre, sa femme, en littérature, ce qui ne signifie
apparemment que la littérature anglaise. Affirmer qu’au-delà de 80 ans on ne peut pas
être un tueur en série est totalement absurde. Il n’y a pas d’âge pour les tueurs en série, ni
de limite d’âge ni d’âge de retraite obligatoire pour les tueurs en série. L’éventuelle
faiblesse physique est souvent facile à compenser par l’intelligence, la planification et la «
culture », je veux dire par la culture des connaissances et expériences accumulées et de
la science criminologique. C’est vrai que les banques ne prêtent plus d’argent au-delà de
80 ans, du moins en France elles ne le font pas, sauf si les personnes âgées ont derrière
elles quelqu’un qui va garantir le prêt, avec en plus une bonne assurance en cas de décès
prématuré. Mais 80 ans n’est plus l’enfer que certains pensaient et pensent encore. Mais
cet enfer est tout à fait en phase avec ce que pense la société, et dans ce livre, Stephen
King tente par tous les moyens de décrire la société telle qu'elle est, et je dois dire que
notre société n'est pas ce qu'elle pourrait être. Soit on en revient à la psychologie et au
comportement infantiles. Ou bien on redevient sénile en dehors de toute logique
temporelle. Regardez une organisation terroriste qui attaque au milieu de la nuit une rave
party rassemblant plusieurs centaines de personnes au milieu d'un désert et les tue toutes
sauf une centaine qui sont faits prisonniers et emmenés en tant qu’otages. Pensée sénile
dans un esprit pris de caprices infantiles. Il est vrai que l’hybridation des deux est plutôt
assez pas mal dangereuse.
Mais pensez à un autre pays où un gouvernement prend la décision d'interdire la
langue minoritaire d'un tiers de la population, mais une langue extrêmement dominante
dans un tiers ou un quart du pays, et essentiellement dans l'industrie. Une guerre pour
imposer cette décision ne serait jamais gagnée sans les fonds d’autres pays qui restent
très gentiment et prudemment sur la touche du conflit lui-même. La guerre civile ou
terroriste des Tigres Tamouls au Sri Lanka a duré 30 ans mais elle a finalement été
vaincue, et ils apprennent désormais, des deux côtés de la fracture linguistique, comment
vivre avec l'autre côté, comment parler la langue de l’autre côté. Pensez à l'apartheid en
Afrique du Sud. Il fallait que les dirigeants afrikaans soient mentalement séniles pour
penser qu’ils imposeraient pour toujours leur domination raciste.
Mais Stephen King essaie de montrer le monde tel qu'il est afin que Jérôme sache
qu'il doit absolument respecter la limite de vitesse lorsqu'il conduit sur n'importe quelle
route des États-Unis, car être arrêté pour excès de vitesse par une marionnette en
uniforme se terminera par la mort d'un conducteur noir. Stephen King a digéré l’épisode
de George Floyd, et bien d’autres, sans jamais le citer nommément. Nous supposerons
que la société normale décrite ici est saine d'esprit, mais que dans cette société saine,
certaines personnes sont, et cela est clairement dit ou impliqué, mentalement dérangées,

ou rendues telles en s’adonnant à une activité ou un vice accoutumants, comme l'alcool,
la drogue, le tabac avec ou sans substance relaxante, les opioïdes ou opiacés, le fentanyl,
etc. Ensuite, certains dérangés mentaux croient à quelque chose de tellement « fracking »
– pour reprendre les mots de Holly Gibney – perturbant qu'ils sont prêts à tuer, même
parfois leur propre famille, pour satisfaire leurs croyances absolues. avec conviction (deux
sens voulus, du moins en anglais, « conviction » et « condamnation ») et fidélité (deux
sens voulus également, du moins en anglais, « fidélité » et « absolument à la lettre »).
Il est maintenant temps d’entrer dans les détails de cette histoire d’horreur racontée
sur le ton fluide et modéré d’une histoire pour adolescents, mais est-ce une histoire pour
adolescents ? Cependant il n’y a absolument aucun élément surnaturel, aucun monstre
dans les placards, aucune intervention divine extra-réaliste, dont les ados sont si friands.
Et vous ne pourrez peut-être pas survivre à la lecture intégrale sans sentir mal à plusieurs
reprises à cause des individus humains, absolument humains, rien qu’humains,
représentatifs de l'élite sociale et intellectuelle de notre société. Imaginez le même
dérangement s’il entrait dans les neurones des politiciens, voire des politicards. Et dans ce
monde, ce dérangement mental a définitivement atteint le psychisme et l’esprit de certains
chefs religieux qui sont devenus, et dans certains cas, sans retour possible, des
fondamentalistes sectaires, voire des terroristes. Ce dérangement commun et courant a
souvent été évoquée par Stephen King, comme avec le passage à tabac d'un homosexuel
au début du roman Ça. Seuls des mots qui ne sont pas censés être utilisés dans une
critique décente vous viennent à l’esprit, votre esprit, un esprit qui rotationne
immédiatement une ou deux consonnes et déguise ces mots sous un costard clownesque,
non pas des vêtements chics mais un habillage décent pour de simples mots orduriers
que l’on ne doit pas utiliser – ici, Oscar Wilde et sa sérieuse injonction n’ont pas cours,
comme quand il dit « j’appelle un chat un chat » – des mots orduriers en costumes de
drag-queen d’opérette comme par exemple (cela ne fonctionne qu’en anglais, je donne
entre parenthèses les mots anglais et leur sens cependant nettoyé de leurs valeurs
ordurières) fracking (« f**king » pour enc**er), dunting (« damning » pour « infernal »), bull
dip (« bull sh*t » pour « de la m**de [de taureau]), bonnocks (celui-ci est plus britannique
et vient des Sex Pistols, mais peu importe, « boll**ks » pour c**illes »), mass-pole (« as*-
*ole » pour « trouduc** »), et bien d'autres. , et ils signifient tout autre chose bien sûr et
cette fois, vous devez être mentalement alerte et observateur, et il est temps de
simplement dire « Lisez sur mes lèvres », comme George H.W. Bush a dit : « Pas de
nouveaux impôts », et les impôts signifient « profiter de force des bijoux de famille privés
de quelqu'un sans son consentement », et cette compréhension mettra lourdement à
l'épreuve votre moralité.
Mais quel est le crime de ces deux-là, un couple marié, des professeurs d’université,
qui est si épouvantable – bien sûr peu attrayant, du moins je l’espère – dans cette
situation ? Les deux professeurs d'université, à la retraite mais pas marginalisés, enlèvent
une personne tous les trois ans (la plupart du temps, du moins c'est le plan), un homme,
une femme et même un garçon, pour les mettre dans une cage en acier, pour activer leurs
foies avec un gros morceau de foie de veau encore frais, c'est-à-dire un énorme morceau
de foie de veau non cuit, pour réactiver le foie des victimes sous la pression du chantage
consistant à ne rien leur donner à boire du tout, tant que le foie cru n'a pas été mangé, ce
qui est vain, bien qu'efficace à une exception près, puisque de toute façon ils sont morts,
en fait juste en attendant que le foie de veau soit digéré et devienne efficace, peut-être car
non prouvé. Ces deux cannibales transforment alors le corps en toutes sortes de produits
censés améliorer leurs performances intellectuelles, soulager les douleurs articulaires ou
de dos, et bien d'autres maux de personnes vieillissantes. Ils parviennent à prolonger leur
survie grâce aux sous-produits du meurtre et du traitement des personnes enlevées.

Stephen King ne précise pas si les victimes sont encore en vie lorsque les kidnappeurs
commencent à extraire les différentes parties du corps qu'ils vont traiter et consommer
d'une manière (en se frottant les articulations) ou d'une autre (en les ingérant après les
avoir mâchés), mais on peut imaginer que c'est le cas, qu’ils sont encore en vie, pour
conserver le plus longtemps possible les bienfaits du foie réactivé des personnes
enlevées. Pas de problème de toute façon puisque leur sous-sol souterrain est
absolument insonorisé. Une seule fois, une policière parle de la pièce où se déroule le
traitement comme étant une « chambre de torture ». J'espère que cela vous coupera
définitivement l'appétit et que vous ne commencerez certainement pas à ronger et à
mâcher la chair de votre partenaire de vie. Rappelez-vous « une livre de chair fraîche »
(Le Marchand de Venise de Shakespeare, remarque clairement antisémite venant d'un juif
qui exige d'un non-juif qu'il tienne sa promesse de lui donner une livre de sa propre chair
si lui, le non-juif, ne peut pas rembourser la dette qu’il a contractée auprès du Juif), « une
livre de chair fraîche », disions-nous, « par jour éloigne le médecin ». Mais il faut garder à
l’esprit que le cannibalisme ne consiste pas nécessairement à manger de la chair. Les
prisonniers des camps de concentration allemands – et attention, ils n'étaient pas tous
juifs, loin de là – lorsqu'ils mouraient, étaient soit brûlés dans un crématorium, ce qui était
un grand gaspillage, soit traités : cheveux et poils récupérés, toute la graisse (mieux valait
faire cela très vite après l’arrivée car le régime du camp était un régime amaigrissant) se
transformait en savon, et toutes sortes d'autres produits étaient fabriqués pour satisfaire
les besoins des bons Aryens à Berlin ou ailleurs, même à Paris et Bruxelles, sans parler
des vêtements, de l'or (en particulier des couronnes d'or sur les dents qui étaient
arrachées en temps voulu après le débarquement des trains à bestiaux) et les bijoux.
Suivez les cannibales par l'odeur et les gémissements provoqués par diverses
douleurs dans leur corps. Mais ne me dites pas que cela n’existe pas. Stephen King parle
d'une mère qui met son bébé au four à micro-ondes parce qu'il pleure constamment. Et
d'autres parents peuvent mettre un enfant dans la machine à laver et l’essorer vivant…
jusqu'à ce que la mort le fasse enfin taire. Et ne comptez pas tous les enfants qui
disparaissent dans des conditions étranges et ne sont jamais retrouvés. La liste et le
nombre sont infinis.
Il faut aussi citer la ségrégation contre les Noirs dans la société américaine. Je dirais
que ce cas peut être généralisé à l’ensemble de l’Occident : chaque pays d’Europe par
exemple a ses catégories spécifiques de population qui sont ségréguées d’une manière
ou d’une autre. La raison en est toujours que ces personnes ne font pas l’effort – ou ne
peuvent tout simplement pas, sur le plan comportemental, racial, culturel ou religieux –
pour se conformer aux normes qu’une société considère comme normales et qu’elle
impose à tous ceux qui ne sont pas confirmés comme conformes à ce préjugé de
conformité, parce qu'il s'agit d'un préjugé et qu'il conduit à la ségrégation, les réactions
parfois violentes (de la part de la police ou d'autres gardiens en uniforme, donc
uniformisés, de la conformité) puis la violence (des deux côtés) et la mort deviennent
courantes sinon normales et même acceptées comme justifiées comme le résultat d’une
exigence conforme. Mais il y a plus.
Bien que cette question n’ait pas grand-chose à voir avec le cannibalisme des deux
professeurs, le COVID-19 est central car les meurtres en série se produisent en plein
cœur de la pire période de la pandémie. Les questions de porter ou non un masque, de
porter ou non des gants, de ne pas serrer la main mais de saluer les gens coude contre
coude, et essentiellement de se faire vacciner, nous reviennent constamment à l'esprit
dans le texte. La mère de Holly a décidé de ne pas se faire vacciner parce qu’elle a suivi
ce que son le président, Trump, a dit : ce n’est rien d’autre qu’un cas de grippe, une

mauvaise grippe si vous voulez. La mère de Holly meurt à l'hôpital et Holly découvre que
sa propre mère et son oncle, le frère de sa mère, lui ont fait croire que toutes les
économies de la mère, de l'oncle et de Holly elle-même avaient été dilapidées, en fait
volées, par un investisseur. Tout cela n’était qu’une farce et elle se retrouve avec un
héritage très important. Elle est une nouvelle millionnaire et elle peut aller dans un bar et
raconter sa blague idiote sur les « cinglés » (« nuts » bien sûr en anglais, voir plus bas).
La répétitivité de l’évocation de la pandémie de COVID-19, l’absurdité de Trump et le
manque de jugement de ceux qui suivent le président sont, pour moi, un peu trop pesants,
mais quand on a vécu Trump comme les Américains l’ont vécu et s’apprêtent à le revivre,
on peut comprendre le trop.
Le fait que Jérôme et Barbara Robinson deviennent tous deux des auteurs publiés à la
même époque, Jérôme avec l'histoire de son arrière-grand-père dans les années 1930 qui
était alors une sorte de gangster noir, et Barbara avec sa poésie centrée sur la peur,
l'anxiété , et la frustration qu’elle-même ressent en tant que femme noire engloutie dans
une société blanche qui considère la ségrégation comme une nécessité, et quand elle est
confrontée à des blancs qui sont de simples criminels et rêvent de pourchasser, voire de
simplement chasser, un homme ou une femme noire dans la rue, et de l’abattre d’un coup
de feu, mortel bien sûr. Ne faites jamais une exécution raciste à moitié. La victime doit
mourir, lentement si possible. En fait, cette ségrégation est plutôt montrée comme
survivant chez certaines personnes, comme par exemple la professeure de littérature
Emily Harris, pour qui rejeter les gens qui sont différents de soi est une simple condition
de survie, et elle penserait même « la survie des plus forts ». même si la véritable citation
est « la survie du plus fort ». Dans son journal, découvert au cours de l'enquête, elle écrit,
en majuscules pour souligner l’emphase, à propos de sa première victime, Jorge Castro,
écrivain en résidence au collège local du même département qu'Emily Harris :
"[1] JE DÉTESTE CET ESPINGOUIN [SPIC, Insulte américaine, argot, un mot
insultant pour une personne originaire d'un pays hispanophone d'Amérique du Sud ou
d'Amérique centrale ou d'une communauté hispanophone aux États-Unis. Dictionnaire
anglais Collins] [2] JE DÉTESTE CE PUTAIN D’ESPINGOUIN, [3] JE DÉTESTE CE
PÉDÉ D’ESPINGOUIN, [4] JE DETESTE CE PUTAIN D’ENCULEUR DE PÉDÉ
D’ESPINGOUIN … etc. "
Elle doit être fan des phrases Lego construites en ajoutant une pièce Lego à celles
déjà assemblées. En d’autres termes, elle n’est pas une littéraire, mais elle ressemble à
l’auteur blanc qui est censé passer l’hiver dans un hôtel des Montagnes Rocheuses pour
s’assurer que tout va bien. Cet autre personnage de Stephen King dans The Shining, au
lieu de taper le roman qu'il est censé écrire, se contente de taper une phrase répétitive sur
des centaines de pages : « ALL WORK AND NO PLAY ». C’est à ce moment-là que nous
constatons vraiment que « les cacahuètes [« NUTS » en anglais pour « peanuts »
cacahuètes, mais le second sens argotiques est « cinglés »] sont en prime gratuite ».
C'est alors aussi qu'on découvre que Stephen King est une vaste jungle et que pour
apprécier sa littérature il faut pouvoir se souvenir des éléments qui se répercutent d'un
roman à l'autre, et pas nécessairement en ordre chronologique. Dans ce cas, Jack
Torrance et Emily Harris sont tous deux des cinglés fous furieux qui deviennent
psychotiques, névrotiques et paranoïaques entièrement centrés et concentrés sur leur
propre nature de cinglés. Ils étaient probablement dérangés avant de commencer leur
carrière criminelle, mais s’ils ne l’étaient pas, ils deviennent tous les « -otique » et « -noïde
» que vous pouvez imaginer après qu’ils eussent commencé leur dépendance aux
meurtres en série. Mais, soit dit en passant, l’affirmation assassine de Holly Gibney selon
laquelle tout cela n’est rien qu’un effet placebo, est probablement excessive, car le

vieillissement est une « activité » psychosomatique vécue par beaucoup comme une
malédiction entièrement tournée vers l’échec, et prendre tout ce que votre psychisme croit
être un remède à votre santé de malade vieillissant et tous ses maux, suffit amplement
pour que le côté somatique l'accepte et que la douleur disparaisse. Pourquoi ?
Comment ? Combien de temps ? Qui sait et qui s’en soucie ? Si de l'aspirine guérit la
douleur d'un cancer métastasé, même pendant une heure, c'est assez vrai, même si elle
ne guérit pas le cancer.
La remarque finale portera sur le style. Il est assez agile et captivant, mais je pense
qu’il contient moins de vitesse et moins de caractère poignant que d’habitude. Et cela
aurait été bien si l'horreur de la torture et du traitement avait été plus graphique et si
l'impuissance d'Emily et de Rodney Harris leur avait été révélée à tous les deux, malgré ce
qu'ils auraient pu penser qu'un sorbet contenant les testicules et la prostate des victimes
masculines et le vagin des victimes féminines auraient pu leur redonner leurs désirs, leurs
impulsions et leurs pulsions sexuels. En fait, cela aurait pu changer le cours de l’histoire et
expliquer un intervalle de quelques années dans le schéma régulier de leurs meurtres en
série, par exemple après le traitement de Jorge Castro. Cela aurait pu aussi approfondir la
réflexion sur l’homosexualité de Jorge Castro : n’est-elle pas véhiculée dans les gènes, les
testicules et la prostate ? Cela ne rend-il pas alors la concoction invalide pour Rodney
Harris qui est évidemment « normal », donc hétérosexuel dans leur définition d’une vie
sexuelle normale ? Ou pire encore, cela ne risquerait-il pas de rendre cette concoction
contagieuse pour Rodney qui deviendrait gay sans le savoir ni le vouloir.
Néanmoins, ce roman est passionnant, et vous remarquerez que je n'ai posé aucune
question personnelle sur l'auteur et son âge ou son vieillissement. Ce n’est pas Stephen
King qui est en jeu dans cette histoire, mais Emily Harris, Rodney Harris et Holly Gibney
qui le sont. Quoi qu’il en soit, le vieillissement est, comme le COVID-19 ou la grippe, une
pandémie qui finit par tuer tout le monde car il n’existe pas de vaccin contre le
vieillissement. Mais je ne pense pas que 80 ans soit le bon tournant, même si quand nous
voyons à la fois Biden et Trump, nous pouvons penser que c’est un tournant et ce doit être
un tournant… pour les politiciens. Profitez du roman.
